Meet Heart BEATS Crime

Today we’d like to introduce you to the Heart BEATS Crime team.

Hi Heart BEATS Crime, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Heart BEATS Crime, also known as HeartSmiles’ Community Crime Reduction team is a project geared towards mending community relationships with law enforcement.

Inspired by our partnership with the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police, we slowly began to realize how crucial conversations between both parties are.

At the peak of 2022, we hosted numerous sessions where youth could come out and tour the UMB Precinct, which in turn led us to expand our outreach during the Summer of 2022 by participating in events led by Baltimore by Baltimore, The Be YOU Talent Showcase, and our community partner’s resource events!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While it may look easy on the outside it has been a journey for our team.

We’ve had to deal with losing team members, schedules not aligning with our law enforcement partners, and finding funding for what we do; however, our team has overcome a lot!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Community Advocacy.

We actively fight to mend the relationship between youth and law enforcement in Baltimore!

We do this by providing youth with resources AND the knowledge needed to utilize said resources.

Lastly, we take the opportunities provided to us to start much-needed conversations that are beneficial for the prosperity of Baltimore.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Our favorite memory was seeing youth express themselves through rap, song, poetry, & dancing at the first monthly Be YOU Talent Showcase that occurred on 9/10/22.

This supported the claim of youth being artistic in every way shape and form.
