Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Teran.
Hi Gabriela, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a first-generation Bolivian-American and the founder and creative director of Teran Media Design, a branding studio rooted in strategy, culture, and intention.
I grew up watching my immigrant parents work incredibly hard, often behind the scenes, building stability through sacrifice. That shaped me early on. I learned resilience, responsibility, and the quiet pressure to succeed not just for myself, but for my family and community.
My education and background are in design and marketing. I worked in different roles throughout my career, but I particularly loved branding because it was about much more than visuals. For me, it became a way to honor identity, tell meaningful stories, and help people feel seen. I noticed how often women of color and first-generation founders were encouraged to water themselves down to fit a mold. I knew there had to be another way.
Teran Media Design was born from that belief. My business was built with a clear mission: to empower women of color by creating brands rooted in their unique identities, mission, and strategy. I believe every woman deserves a brand that reflects her true identity and amplifies her story, creating meaningful impact in her community.
Our work is guided by five core values: empowerment, authenticity, creativity, empathy, and collaboration. These values shape every project we take on and ensure that the brands we create are genuine, innovative, and deeply aligned with our clients’ visions. We don’t just design brands. We partner with our clients, bringing both expertise and care to help them build something that feels aligned, elevated, and sustainable.
Like many founders, my journey hasn’t been linear. I’ve experienced growth seasons, challenges, and moments of reinvention that have deepened how I approach my work. Those experiences allow me to show up not just as a designer and creative director but as a strategic partner who understands the weight and responsibility of building something meaningful.
What truly drives my brand is the belief that women of color have the power to create real change in the world. Through thoughtful strategy and culturally relevant design, we help our clients build brands that resonate, inspire, and leave a lasting legacy. This is more than a business to me. It’s a mission to uplift and celebrate the stories of women of color, one brand at a time.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.
I immigrated from Bolivia to Maryland in 2003, and as a teenager I had to navigate a new culture, a new language, and the reality of being undocumented. That meant limited access to financial aid, juggling multiple jobs while in school, and learning early how to be resourceful just to move forward.
I began designing and freelancing as Teran Media Design while I was in community college, teaching myself Photoshop and creating marketing materials for local businesses. While I had the creative skills, I had no experience running a business. I struggled with pricing, identifying the right clients, and building confidence as a young designer.
Those challenges led me to pause my business endeavors and return to school and work on my bachelor’s at the University of Maryland, where I earned my degree and spent several years working in private businesses and higher education marketing, focusing on DEI-centered branding, multimedia and storytelling. Over time, I realized I wanted to do work that created deeper, more meaningful change and allowed me to work directly with communities I care about.
That clarity led me to relaunch Teran Media Design with a renewed focus on empowering women of color through strategic, culturally grounded branding. The struggles shaped my approach and continue to inform how I build and lead today.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Teran Media Design is a branding studio that specializes in strategic brand identity and web design for women of color and mission-driven founders. We help our clients translate who they are, what they stand for, and where they’re going into brands that feel aligned, elevated, intentional, and allow them to reach the next level of their business.
What sets us apart is our strategy-first approach and our deep respect for cultural identity. We don’t believe in surface-level branding or trends for the sake of aesthetics. Every project begins with clarity, positioning, and purpose, ensuring that the visual identity is rooted in meaning and built to grow with the business.
We’re known for creating brands that feel both thoughtful and powerful. Brands that tell real stories, resonate with the right audience, and support long-term growth. Our work blends creativity with structure, and empathy with expertise, allowing us to partner closely with our clients rather than simply deliver a logo or a website.
What I’m most proud of, brand-wise, is building a studio that creates space for women of color to show up fully in their businesses. Through our branding, web design, and strategic guidance, we help founders build visibility, confidence, and impact. I want readers to know that Teran Media Design is more than a design studio. It’s a partner in helping women of color build brands that honor their identity and leave a lasting legacy.
