Meet Fernanda Celidonio of DMV

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fernanda Celidonio.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in Brazil with very little, but with parents who taught me that hard work, integrity, and perseverance could take me anywhere. From an early age, I dreamed of building a life bigger than my circumstances, even before I knew what that dream would become.

My journey started in Brazil studying computer programming, later switching to hospitality, and eventually moved to the United States to study International Business, where I graduated. My career led me into large-scale events and leadership roles: I became a producer for many events in Brazil, including the reality TV show Brazil’s Next Top Model (called Menina Fantastica) , served as a venue manager for the FIFA World Cup and FIFA Confederations Cup, and later worked in the U.S. as a club manager for the Baltimore Ravens and an event manager for the Washington Redskins (now the Washington Commanders). From the outside, it looked like success, but inside, I was still searching for my calling.

What many people didn’t know is that beauty was always part of my life. Since I was a child, I loved everything about makeup, hair, and self-expression. I was always the friend doing everyone’s makeup, giving beauty advice, and helping women get ready for special moments. Even while working in corporate roles, I continued doing makeup on the side, not as a business, but simply because I loved helping my friends feel confident. I remember not even knowing how much I should charge and having clients cancel last minute, never imagining where it could lead.

That realization came during the pandemic. What began as a leap of faith became a defining turning point. I was chosen by one of the most respected beauty brands in the industry, Danessa Myricks, to represent her brand. Being in contact with Danessa during that early stage (through conversations, guidance, and Zoom calls) helped me discover my artistry and find my voice as an artist. She guided me in the right direction and taught me invaluable lessons about makeup, lighting, photography, ingredients, and how the beauty industry truly works. To this day, I truly believe I would not be where I am without her presence at the beginning of my career.

Today, I work with clients from all over the world. I serve locally, but I’m also flown internationally to be part of my clients’ most important moments. When I think back to the days of questioning my worth, the contrast reminds me how far belief, consistency, and purpose can take you.

Every chapter of my journey prepared me for this one. I’m deeply grateful for the path, the people, and the courage it took to keep going, especially before my vision was clear.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all, it was far from a smooth road! My journey has been filled with uncertainty, fear, and moments of deep self doubt. One of the most challenging turning points came during the pandemic. I was coming from what felt like a secure job, and suddenly everything was put on hold. Being placed on standby meant not working and not getting paid, and the anxiety of not knowing what would happen next was overwhelming.

It was during that time that a close friend encouraged me to try hair and makeup full-time, since that was something she knew I loved. I doubted the timing and questioned whether it made sense, especially in such an uncertain moment. But I quickly realized that even in crisis, people were still choosing love, eloping, taking photos, and preserving meaningful moments. Beauty became a way for them to feel grounded, confident, and present during a time when nothing felt guaranteed.

Also, as an immigrant, the path was even more challenging. Navigating cultural differences, language barriers, and a new professional environment tested me constantly. There were many moments I was questioning whether I was making the right decisions or taking the right risks. But along the way, I met incredibly amazing people who believed in me, supported me, and helped me grow! Their encouragement made all the difference!

Looking back, every challenge was absolutely worth it. I’m grateful I never gave up, even when the path felt so unclear. Those experiences shaped not only my career, but the person I am today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a luxury makeup artist, but I do goes far beyond hair and makeup. I specialize in luxury bridal, special event, and destination beauty, but what truly defines my work is the experience I create and the way my clients feel from start to finish.

I’ve developed a technique focused on elevating my clients’ features while keeping their skin looking like real healthy skin. My goal is never to mask or transform someone, but to refine and enhance what’s already there. Many clients tell me they feel like they have a “beauty filter” on their face, yet don’t feel like they’re wearing makeup at all , they still feel like themselves, just elevated, confident, and polished.

The experience matters just as much as the final look. I create a calm, supportive environment where clients feel taken care of, understood, and completely at ease. The moments after the service ( the pause, the smile, sometimes even happy tears) are what bring me the most fulfillment. That reaction is everything to me, because it means I’ve done more than just makeup; I’ve helped someone step into an important moment feeling confident and grounded. A lot of clients end up becoming really good friends afterwards.

What sets me apart is the combination of refined artistry, emotional awareness, and professionalism. Clients trust me not only with how they look, but with how they experience one of the most meaningful days of their lives, and that trust is what I’m most proud of!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk has been a constant part of my journey. I’ve taken many major risks, but the biggest ones were choosing to walk away from what looked like “safe” paths in order to follow what felt right. Leaving structured careers, starting over in a new country, and eventually building my own business without guarantees all required trust, both in myself and in the process.

When I decided to go full time in hair and makeup during the pandemic, there was no certainty. The world was unstable, income was unpredictable, and fear was very real. But I’ve learned that risk doesn’t always mean being reckless, it means being honest with yourself. I knew that staying somewhere misaligned would cost me more in the long run than trying something new.

My perspective on risk is simple: growth lives on the other side of discomfort. I don’t take risks blindly, I take them intentionally. I listen to my intuition, prepare as much as I can, and then commit fully. Even when things don’t go exactly as planned, every risk teaches you something valuable and moves you forward.

Looking back, every risk I’ve taken has shaped who I am today. None of them were easy, but all of them were necessary. I truly believe that choosing purpose over fear is one of the most powerful decisions you can make.
