Emily Williams, a proud Philadelphia native who grew up in Maryland and graduated from Morgan State University in 2001, is the passionate founder behind Been Around the World (BATW) Travels, a lifestyle travel agency launched in 2018. Emily’s love affair with travel began long before BATW Travels, as she meticulously planned adventures for family and friends.
It was through these experiences that she noticed a void in minority-owned travel agencies catering to travelers of color. Driven by a desire to fill this gap, Emily embarked on her journey to create BATW Travels, curating unforgettable trips to destinations like South Africa, Greece, Kenya, and Ghana. Emily’s personal touch and commitment to diversity have made BATW Travels a beacon of inclusivity in the travel industry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a minority traveler, I’ve faced numerous obstacles in my journey. From encountering discriminatory treatment to struggling to find travel agencies that understand the needs of travelers of color, these challenges have highlighted the lack of representation and inclusivity in the travel industry.
However, these hurdles only fueled my determination to address these issues head-on, leading me to establish BATW Travels. Through my platform, I’m dedicated to providing inclusive and culturally immersive travel experiences for all. My goal is to dismantle barriers and create a more equitable and welcoming environment for minority travelers worldwide.
