Today we’d like to introduce you to Duyen Nguyen.
Hi Duyen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My makeup journey began thanks to a suggestion from my mother-in-law, just before I moved to the U.S. nine years ago. At the time, it was hard to find a Vietnamese hair and makeup artist—or it was very expensive—so she encouraged me to give it a try. My major was Finance, so makeup wasn’t even on my radar, but I thought, “Why not?” I had no idea it would eventually become a true passion.
Things became more real when a friend of mine, who was starting out as a photographer, asked me to join his team as a hair and makeup artist. That was the turning point—people started reaching out to me for makeup on their shoots. From there, I began taking on clients for weddings, events, and other special occasions.
Over time, my style developed into what people now describe as “soft glam,” and I’ve been lucky to grow my business through word-of-mouth, referrals, and amazing collaborations with photographers and creatives.
Today, I focus primarily on bridal hair and makeup, and I absolutely love helping people feel their best on such an important day. I truly believe makeup can be a powerful way to boost confidence and highlight someone’s natural beauty. It’s been such a rewarding journey, and I’m excited to see where it goes next!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road! In the beginning, I wasn’t even sure if I truly liked it, I just started learning from a local MUA in Vietnam. It wasn’t formal training; I mostly just watched him work and picked things up along the way.
After moving to the U.S., I had to teach myself even more—everything from new techniques to building a proper kit and learning how to work with different skin tones and eye shapes. I didn’t attend a professional makeup school here since it was too expensive, so there was a lot of trial and error, and tons of practice on friends, family, and models.
Starting over in a new country also came with its own challenges—language barriers, cultural differences, and building a client base from scratch. But over time, through word-of-mouth, social media, and staying consistent, things slowly started to grow.
Once I decided to fully commit to this path, I got my cosmetology license and also took an advanced hair and makeup course in Vietnam that focused on working with Asian features. The training itself was intense and pushed me far out of my comfort zone. But it also gave me a deeper understanding of how to enhance features in a way that feels both flattering and natural—especially for Asian clients, who are often underrepresented in Western beauty education.
Looking back, all the struggles helped shape both my skills and my style. I’m truly grateful for the journey—even the tough parts!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sure! I run a small business specializing in bridal and special event hair and makeup, based in Springfield, VA.
My style is often described as “soft glam”—I love creating looks that enhance natural beauty while still feeling like you, just a little more elevated and timeless. While I primarily work with brides, I also do makeup for photoshoots, maternity sessions, and other big life moments.
What sets me apart is my deep understanding of Asian features, thanks to both personal experience and advanced training. I take pride in offering a calm, personalized experience for every client. I’m very detail-oriented and always take time to really listen to each person’s needs and concerns. My goal is to help people feel confident, beautiful, and like the best version of themselves on their special day.
My business has grown through trust, word-of-mouth, and genuine connection. Whether it’s creating a flawless bridal look or sharing a laugh during glam time, I truly love what I do and feel lucky to be part of such meaningful moments. Some clients I’ve had the joy of working with through multiple milestones—from dating, engagement, and wedding to maternity and family events. It’s an honor to be there for these special chapters and feel like a small part of their journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I do believe luck has played a part in my journey—but it’s consistency, hard work, and meaningful relationships that have truly shaped the path.
Of course, I’ve had moments where I felt incredibly lucky. I’ve always had the support of my husband, and it was actually my mother-in-law who first encouraged me to explore this path. A friend inviting me to join his creative team came at just the right time—when I was still unsure of what direction to take—and that opportunity helped kickstart my makeup career. I also feel so fortunate for those first clients who trusted me, even while I was still learning and growing.
But over time, I’ve come to realize that those “lucky” moments only came because I stayed open, kept showing up, and was willing to try—even when everything felt uncertain.
In the end, I think it’s been a mix of moments of luck and a whole lot of dedication that brought me here. I’m deeply grateful for the luck I’ve had—but I’m even more proud of the persistence, heart, and passion that have carried me through.
