Today we’d like to introduce you to Dunnie Onasanya.
Hi Dunnie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I committed to my artistry practice in 2018. Creating art has aided tremendously in my healing process from a very traumatic life change that became the catalyst to me awakening to my soul mission & owning my power.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
At times I have experienced and overcome “imposter syndrome” in my artistry journey.
For example in 2018 when it came time for me to apply for the studio artist residency program at VisArts Center Art Gallery. Due to the fact that I was experiencing feelings of uncertainty I literally turned my application in the day before the deadline.
About a month later, I received an email from the gallery director stating that ” They would love to have you as an artist-in-resident at the gallery.”
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a canvas painter, muralist & creative entrepreneur. My work is heavily influenced by my West African heritage and faith in GOD.
As an expressionist intuitive painter, I create breathtaking abstract works, cultural masks, hamsas, and other historic symbols with the use of bright bold colors, metallic paints, gold leaf, crushed glass, and jewels. I am most proud of my resilience. I am so grateful that my life journey has brought me to this peaceful place where I am able to be both a full-time artist and a full-time mommy of two.
I am also really grateful to be one of the newest 2022 color authorities for the Home Depot & BEHR Paint. I was recently featured in Hyundai’s national campaign for the world’s first-ever Sport-Adventure Vehicle, the 2022 Santa Cruz.
I was also selected to be a part of CASETiFY’s Black Artist Collective in celebration of Black History Month. 4 of my designs are a part of this special launch and I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to present my bold & inspirational artwork in such a functional way for both iPhone and Android users,
What’s next?
I currently specialize in creating custom artwork for both residential & commercial interiors.
My creative team is so amazing and supports me in bringing my artistic visions into fruition. We are currently preparing to release my next collection of original artwork on canvas that will be readily available for purchase via my website.
I am a huge believer in divine timing. I have many plans and dreams for the future but from my life experiences, I have learned that I must keep an open heart and mind as a flow-through journey.
I literally tell myself to take things one day at a time and to always strive to show up as my best self in every aspect of my life.
