Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetria Koninis.
Hi Demetria, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with the cello began when I was 9 years old, when I first heard its deep, rich sound in my public school music program. I was instantly drawn to its voice, and that spark has never left me. Over the years, the cello became my constant companion—through life changes, challenges, and moments of joy.
After earning my B.S. in Therapeutic Recreation from Syracuse University, I spent 15 years as a recreation therapist, often playing cello for patients. I saw firsthand how music could calm, uplift, and connect people, and that’s where I began to weave sound healing into my work.
In 2000, the loss of my mother to cancer became a turning point in my life. In the midst of grief, I began listening more closely to the quiet whisper inside me—a persistent calling to do more with the cello. That same year, I was introduced to the Suzuki community and began studying the Suzuki Method, not only as a way to teach children and adults, but also as a way to deepen my own growth as a cellist. This period solidified my commitment, not just to playing, but to exploring the cello’s potential to bring comfort, connection, and healing. My sound healing path fully came into focus in 2019 after a life-changing retreat in Costa Rica, where I experienced firsthand the profound and transformative power of the cello’s vibrations.
Since then, I’ve pursued extensive cello training, studying with world-renowned teachers and mastering the Suzuki method. I’m also trained in Reiki Level 2, Donna Eden energy techniques, and advanced sound bowl practices, which I blend with the cello to create deeply restorative sound experiences. I developed my own teaching studio—now rebranded as The Cello Experience—where I offer individual sessions, workshops, retreats and cello lessons.
Today, my work is about creating spaces where people can feel, release, and restore—guided by the unique voice of the cello. It’s been a lifelong journey of listening, learning, and sharing, and I’m still evolving every day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all—but the bumps in the road have shaped me into who I am today. I didn’t begin with proper cello technique, so I had to relearn the fundamentals as an adult, which takes extra patience and perseverance. Learning later in life isn’t easy, and somewhere in my childhood, I had lost confidence in who I could be—likely due to a slight, undiagnosed learning disability. That self-doubt stayed with me for years, making it harder to trust my own progress.
There was also a time when a colleague pushed me to advance faster than my skills allowed, which was challenging. But those experiences taught me to set healthy boundaries, to listen to my own pace, and to trust the process.
All of this happened while working full time, raising two children, and managing a marriage. It wasn’t easy, but it taught me that persistence matters, that passion can survive even in busy seasons, and that your dreams are worth showing up for—even when the path forward is anything but smooth.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work combines the deep, rich vibrations of the cello with sound bowls and energy healing techniques like Reiki to create immersive experiences that help people relax, release tension, and restore balance—physically, emotionally, and energetically.
I offer a variety of sessions tailored to different needs. Individual sessions provide a deeply personal and intuitive experience, allowing me to focus entirely on a person’s unique energy and healing needs. For groups and retreats, I create live cello sound journeys that guide participants into a shared space of calm and restoration. These group sessions have a powerful collective energy, and I often feel the shift in the room as the music connects and heals everyone present.
What I’m most proud of is building and growing this business from a deeply personal calling—a whisper I chose to follow after losing my mother. Along the way, I learned to guide children and adults through the Suzuki Method of playing the cello, while also developing my skills as a sound practitioner. Together, these paths have allowed me to help people of all ages discover the joy of music and experience the profound healing it can bring.
This journey has been about more than just playing music; it’s about creating meaningful connections and holding space for healing. Seeing people find peace and renewal through The Cello Experience
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson has been embracing the steady, ongoing process of learning what it really means to own a business and create a brand for yourself. This world, especially with technology, moves so fast, and as someone who’s now 58, it’s been a big adjustment—but also really exciting.
I’ve had to grow not just as a musician and healer, but as someone who understands marketing, social media, and how to share my work in a digital world. It’s been challenging but also fun, because I’ve found ways to weave technology into my music practice, like using a looper pedal to layer sounds and create richer, more immersive experiences.
Overall, I’ve learned that growth is constant, and staying open to new tools and ideas keeps both the work and the journey fresh and fulfilling.
