Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Mitchell.
Hi Chelsea, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began servicing at the age of 12. I was your local neighborhood braider. I knew that I had a passion for doing hair so I later enrolled in cosmetology school @TC Williams Hs. At Tc Williams my mentors Patricia Farah and Mrs Stacey guided and encouraged me through my journey in cosmetology. After I graduated in 2005 from high school, I became a licensed Cosmetologist I was so excited to receive my license. I knew then that this was just the begging.
As a new stylist, I did it all. I worked at many diverse salons so that I could be the best version of myself that I could be. Although I received my cosmetology license, I wanted to see what pursuing a career in music would be like. I loved to sing but was not sure if that would be the right road for me to travel. I later found out about 4.5 years later that I did not want to become a performer or teacher for a living. I love to help others. However, I learned that teaching in k-12 was more like being a full-time parent or disciplinarian. I also was pretty shy about performing. I then found out about how much my starting salary would be as a teacher. I then remembered my mentor Mrs. Stacey who told us about her owning her own salon and how she had a beauty supply and booth renters there. Even back then, she told us that she was near or making a 6 figure salary easily.
At that moment, I thought, why not me? Even though I was just another black girl who lived in Alexandria, VA right outside of DC; I believed in me. On my journey, I delt with many trials. I moved from shop to shop and my living situation was not always stable. At the end of the day, I just wanted to make it as a cosmetologist.
Now years later, I have my own brick and mortar online store and Hair loss Product Line. I create Hair systems for women who are dealing with alopecia and cancer. I have been fortunate to partner and have offered opportunities with local hospitals, MDS, non-profits, and various cancer groups in The DMV. I have went from overlooked to overbooked. In the begging of my journey, I often felt defeated because of a lack of clientele. Now my clients are sometimes upset because I don’t respond to them in a 1hr time frame. I just have a large demand for my services. My dream is to start a foundation for women who are economically challenged and who have serve alopecia. I have already started ac hair deive where many donate their hair. I love to help women who suffer from alopecia feel great and restore their confidence.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes, I have dealt with many financial hardships. I have lived at many shared spaces where there were physical threats, fighting, bug infestations and in improvised neighborhoods. I would fear getting robbed from a long night’s work. I would walk and use the metro as my main form of transportation, where I would have to sit out in the hot sun even on red code days and deal with occasional drunks and foes.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
