Meet Carlos Garcia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Garcia.

Hi Carlos, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my entertainment career out of frustration with my current life. I moved from Baltimore to the NYC area with big dreams. But found myself working a job I hated in a cubicle I despised. That’s when I decided to take acting classes AND pursue stand-up comedy. I was immediately hooked. I had done acting growing up and always loved performing but had never tried to do it at a level where you could earn a living on it. And I had always wanted to try to stand up but never imagined it was possible in my life. Little by little, I grew to the point where I was confident in myself to take the next leap. That is when I left my job in the city and focused on chasing my dreams full time. Today I’m still chasing dreams. However, I have a resume I would have only dreamed of back then. I recently made my national TV debut on MTV and have been featured in HuffPost, the E! network, Amazon Prime, and more. I have performed stand-up around the country and was a featured act at the Baltimore Comedy Festival. I still have a lot of goals I want to achieve, but I can happily say I am on my way! In June of this year, my father passed away. He was my best friend and the biggest supporter of my dreams. After losing him, I made a promise to myself that I would continue to move forward in chasing the dreams he supported so much. Now I work to move forward, not just for me. But for him, as well. I know he is still watching and smiling down at me. I will work hard to fulfill my dreams and make him proud.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not! The entertainment business is filled with rejection and self-doubt. For every yes you hear, there are 10 no’s heard right before it. Plus, it is a life where you struggle to make ends meet until you reach a certain level. So, ultimately, it’s a life filled with sacrifice. Plus, you’d be surprised how many people in your close circles laugh at you and diminish your dreams when you say you will leap like that! It’s only once they see you start to succeed that they jump on board with that being said. I have zero regrets about choosing this life. I love it, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a stand-up comic, actor, and podcaster. I have been featured on MTV, the E! Network, Amazon Prime, HuffPost, and more. I co-host my podcast, the FratChat Podcast, with my fellow Towson University alumni, Chris Moore, who is part of the BLEAV Network. It is available on all major podcast providers and works with many great sponsors, such as MANSCAPED and True Classic Tees. I produce a comedy show in New York City called THE Greatest Comedy Show of ALL Time, which has been going strong for over 5 years. I also co-produced two excellent shows: the ‘Jest Kidding! Comedy Show’ and ‘Fun Intended,’ with the hilarious NYC-based comic Barak Ziv.

What sets me aside in this industry is that I treat people with kindness. I have high expectations for the people I work with, but I make sure to create an environment full of positivity and fun. Ultimately that creates a fun working environment for my shows, podcast recordings, etc., and leads to our best results. I am proud to have achieved everything through hard work, acting, stand-up, podcast, etc. Everything has been a combination of hard work and trial and error. Yet they slowly but surely churn out positive results. However, I’m most proud that I can always remain positive, even when things look bleak. This positivity has brought opportunities to my life that I could only have imagined in my previous life. So stay positive, people! You can’t see the path ahead if you don’t have a little light in your life!

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Find people who have done things you want but are not too far ahead of you. Those people can give you a roadmap for where you want to go. Also, find a mentor that inspires you when the chips are down, someone who is not afraid to share their struggles/mistakes and show you how to learn from them. Remember: No one is perfect! Every who makes it anywhere does so by learning from many mistakes. So find someone who gives you the tools to learn and grow.
