Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisha Needum.
Hi Alisha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
In January 2018, I was working paycheck to paycheck. I was on the phone with my mother expressing how I was tired of the lack of extra spending money I had. My mother being the entrepreneur woman she is, encouraged me to start my own business. I had to really think of what kind of business I could start, and then I remember how everyone loved the chocolate covered treats I made for my brother’s baby shower. I looked into what I had to do to start a treat business, and then I Fancy Sweets was born.
Initially, I started by just providing sweets such as chocolate covered strawberries, flavored popcorn and more. Now I decorate events, have prop rentals, and provide custom party favors for all types of events. I have been working full time for myself as of December 2020 and look forward to all that is to come from I Fancy Sweets.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Running my own business with no prior experience hasn’t been all rainbows and butterflies. In the beginning stages I wanted to quit multiple times. I was working 10 hour shifts , taking care of a 1 year old , and working I Fancy Sweets. Time management has been the biggest issue. A lot of late nights up prepping for events or researching how to further my business. Balancing work / life can be hard as an entrepreneur.
I don’t get to clock out at 5 and not worry about work until the morning. Thankfully over time, I’ve gotten better. and have been enjoying my off days.
It can be very overwhelming being the owner. I do not have someone above me to tell me what’s the next step. I have a lot of love and support that lets me know that what I’m doing is working and I am moving in the right direction.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an event decorator. I provide decorations from table linen and centerpieces to dessert tables and balloons. I also make chocolate covered treats such as chocolate covered pretzels , breakable hearts, and more. I recently started making custom party favors like chip bags and hand sanitizers. I just got some new inventory for rent such as my champagne wall and a treat dispenser wall. Of all these things, I specialize and am known for decorating. I’m most proud of my champagne wall because i built it myself. I provide quality service, at a reasonable price with great customer service.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’d say I’ve had a lot of good luck with my business. I’ve come so far in such a short time and this is only the beginning. I am blessed that business has been at an all-time high in the middle of a pandemic. I’ve had a lot of opportunities to work with amazing customers, I’ve expanded my services, and work with clients outside of Maryland.
