Maxwell Service’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

Maxwell Service shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Maxwell, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
One thing that is often misunderstood about Sweet Kings is that we’re only a funnel cake shop . While we do offer some of the best funnel cakes in town, our business is actually a bit more complex. We have a diverse menu designed to cater to a wide range of tastes and services.
We also go beyond just fundraising. We actively partner and collaborate with various organizations, from non profits targeting the homelessness crisis to employee appreciation breakfasts for international corporations located here in Maryland. We believe in building strong community ties and creating unique experiences for all of our clients.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello there! I’m Max Service, a passionate young entrepreneur from Maryland, and I’m thrilled to introduce you, Sweet Kings. I’m all about three things: building strong communities, championing athletics, and, of course, creating irresistible desserts.
What started in July 2023 as a simple way to help my youngest cousin’s cheer program, the Joppatowne Seahawks, has exploded into a full-blown mission.
Sweet Kings began with a focus on local sports teams. We’ve helped to support and raise money for new uniforms and equipment through our dessert fundraisers. Since then, Sweet Kings has opened up incredible doors, allowing us to change lives and make a real impact. For example, we’ve partnered with local schools to fundraise for classroom supplies and collaborated with community centers and local businesses to provide desserts for their events. We’re not just serving up treats. We’re creating long lasting experiences from familiar faces.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
The experience of visiting the Central African Republic with my father really shaped how I see the world. Witnessing people work incredibly hard just to provide the basics for their families was a profound moment for me. It highlighted the importance of gratitude for my loved ones and ignited a deep sense of purpose to be a source of light and warmth for those who are preserving.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The biggest fear that has held me back is the fear of failure. Specifically, the fear of putting myself out there and embarrassing myself or letting my friends and family down. Overcoming this has been a journey, but I’ve realized that the potential for success and the chance to make a real impact on my community far outweighs the fear of falling short. Every day, I strive to turn that fear into fuel, using it as motivation to keep pushing forward and prove to myself and others what’s possible.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire my colleagues at the Epicenter, Harford County’s best community center. As a teacher’s aide and shuttle driver, managing elementary school students can be challenging, but I can always count on my co-workers for support, both at work and outside of it. They’re not just dedicated to the well-being of our students; they also genuinely care about the health and wellness of our entire staff our student as well the families of our staff and students. Their character their commitment to one another and to the children is truly admirable.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m working—not just on my businesses, but on myself. It’s in the process of building, growing, and becoming the best version of myself that I find true calm. This work is what allows me to continue being a valuable resource for others, which is deeply fulfilling.
