Luvenia Mayo on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Luvenia Mayo shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Luvenia, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me begins with my devotional and time in the Word of God, which sets the tone and focus for everything I do. After that, I review upcoming catering events, concession schedules, and product orders for our smoked turkey ham. Much of my day is spent working alongside my team—testing recipes, coordinating logistics, or meeting with clients. No two days are ever the same, but each one is centered on faith, problem-solving, teamwork, and finding new ways to grow Flair Cuisine while serving my community.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Luvenia Mayo, and I am the founder and owner of Flair Cuisine, a Baltimore-based catering and concessions company built on the belief that “Food’s Essential, Flavor’s a Choice.” What makes Flair Cuisine unique is our ability to bring creativity and consistency to every event—whether it’s catering weddings and corporate functions, running concessions at sports complexes and festivals, or developing our signature retail product, the Savory Tom smoked turkey a ham flavored alternative with rich flavor and wide appeal.

Flair Cuisine stands out because we don’t just serve food—we create experiences. From elegant buffets to quick-serve concessions, everything we do is infused with flavor, hospitality, and excellence. Right now, we are expanding into retail distribution with our turkey, ham flavored line while continuing to grow our catering and concessions, with a vision to become a nationally recognized brand that also reinvests in the community through job creation and mentorship.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was learning the 23rd Psalm as a child. Reciting those words gave me strength and comfort, knowing that my Father God was with me no matter what I faced. Around the same time, I also discovered the joy of helping my family prepare meals for gatherings. Seeing people enjoy what I created made me realize food had the power to bring people together. Those two lessons—faith and service—still guide me today as I lead Flair Cuisine and impact my community through food.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be: trust the process and keep your faith strong. Every challenge you face will shape your resilience, and every setback will prepare you for a greater comeback. God’s plan for you is bigger than what you can see right now, so don’t be afraid to dream boldly. Keep walking in purpose, and know that your passion for food and serving others will one day grow into something much greater than you imagined.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the food industry tells itself is that success is only measured by scale—being the largest caterer, the biggest concessionaire, or the most widespread product on shelves. In reality, true success comes from consistency, authenticity, and how you treat people. Another lie is that convenience has to come at the expense of quality. At Flair Cuisine, I challenge that by creating food that is both flavorful and accessible, whether at a wedding, a concession stand, or through our smoked turkey ham. I believe the industry often overlooks the power of community connection and the impact small businesses have, yet that’s exactly where the heart of hospitality lives.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
What people may most misunderstand about my legacy is that it’s not just about food or building a business—it’s about faith, service, and creating opportunities for others. Some may see Flair Cuisine as simply a catering company or a brand, but at its core it’s a platform to uplift my community, provide jobs, and mentor future entrepreneurs. My legacy is about showing that with God, resilience, and hard work, you can turn passion into purpose. The food is the vehicle, but the impact on people’s lives is the true legacy.
