Today we’d like to introduce you to Yevheniia Storozhuk.
Yevheniia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
All my life, I was told I was more of a math person than a creative mind. But ever since middle school, I loved dressing up, doing makeup with my girlfriends, and taking the most creative pictures ever after. I didn’t see it as creativity back then. But now I think that little creative spark was probably the first sign of my interest in makeup.
Then, in 2018, while I was studying finance in college in Ukraine (I’m originally from there), because remember, I thought I was a math person, I found out about a makeup school that was always looking for makeup models — not actual models, just faces to practice on.
I started going there and literally fell in love with makeup, mostly because of how passionately the teacher was talking about it. I also realized makeup was way more complicated than I thought, and I loooved that challenge.
At some point, I decided I didn’t want to be a makeup model anymore. I wanted to be the one doing the makeup.
And that’s when my whole journey, and the challenge, began.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’m an extremely perfectionistic person, and I’m very focused on the result. So working with people while knowing I wasn’t the best because I was still new to the profession was really hard for me.
I had so much fear, anxiety, and imposter syndrome — and honestly, I still do.
My first makeup appointments took literally 3-4 hours, and I still wasn’t happy with the result. You know how when you’re just starting out, sometimes you don’t even see your mistakes because you don’t know what you’re looking for yet? I felt like I could see every single mistake I made. So I just kept practicing, perfecting, and trying to make everything better. It felt like there was no end to it.
Then, after working for almost a full year, I moved to the US. New country. New techniques. New clientele with completely different tastes and needs.
And the challenge just kept going. Honestly, I don’t think it ever really ends.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Today, I can confidently say that I’m an established bridal makeup artist. I’m definitely biased toward wedding makeup looks, and truly, I don’t think I can see it any other way anymore.
Back in the day, I loved playing with color and creating really sexy, full-glam looks. But since 2022, I’ve been almost fully focused on the bridal industry, and naturally, my style has evolved.
Now I would describe myself as more of a natural-to-soft-glam makeup artist, because that’s what bridal makeup is about: youthful, dewy, blushy, bronzey skin with a bright eye that pops and a light lip. Most DMV brides ask for a timeless, polished, “me, but better” glam, and I can’t blame them for it. IMHO, it’s the most flattering, classy type of makeup that suits everyone and gets the best feedback from my clients, so it’s kind of a win-win.
A huge part of my style today also comes from my background. That first makeup school in Ukraine, plus years and years of experience in the U.S., helped me develop what I feel is the perfect blend of both cultures: the classy American bride with a subtle European touch. A lot of my clients actually notice that difference and tell me it’s one of the things they love most about my work.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
When you work with weddings, you spend most of your career learning how to eliminate every risk and make the result as stable and consistent as possible, so you have to take the safest route. With every stroke of the brush, I think about longevity, timing, whether the bride will like it, and how to make sure nothing unexpected gets in the way of the final look. So it may seem like we’re doing the same boring glam on everyone, but in reality, it’s the most stressful job ever. The stakes are high, and there’s no room for failure.
But who doesn’t love a small challenge? That’s what got me here in the first place, remember? (mysteriously winks)
