Today we’d like to introduce you to Trey Robinson.
Hi Trey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My initial introduction to music was thru the sounds my aunt & uncle blasted out of their speakers as a youth. Back then, I felt privileged to be able to hear some of the best hip hop & r&b at such a young age- that led me into playing the drums in bands around the city. I started writing poems as a way to reflect on some of the troubles I faced & watch them translate into songs shortly after.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The roads have been a rollercoaster for sure, one filled with more than enough lessons to count. One of the most important lessons for me has been learning to become an effective independent artist while balancing stability in my personal life, keeping my spirits high thru the thick of things & adjusting to the ever-changing musical landscape of the digital age.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a recording artist, I like to mix melody with lyrics that mean something. Similar to the way I felt when I first heard Outkast or NERD. I like to think of myself as a visual artist with the way I approach songwriting. I try to keep things as colourful & vivid as possible.
I’m also a clothing designer for the brand MPH. Aiming to bring streetwear back here in Baltimore in a real way.
What makes you happy?
I’m the most at peace/bliss when I’m creating something new or challenging myself. Each day I wake up I feel the need to earn my keep in society. It could be something as simple as writing a new song before sunset or finishing a 6-mile run – I’m happiest when I feel like I’m taking full advantage of my life.
