Life & Work with Travia Earl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Travia Earl.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always knew as a child I wanted to peruse a career in fashion. I was known for wearing odd and unique pieces to school and church. I started being known for my fashion sense everywhere I go. After high school, I took a year off to model and start my career as a makeup artist.

I started taking clients for weddings, birthdays, etc. I then attended the Art Institute of Washington where I studied fashion and retail management. While in school, I got my first retail job at Forever 21. There I started working as a visual stylist where I styled all the mannequins and did the window displays of the store.

When working there I would take pictures of the outfits I would wear while working and post them on social media. I started to get people to follow me to look at my OOTD pictures. I then worked at Nordstrom as a stylist where I would make appointments and set up dressing rooms full of outfits for my clients to try. From there, I realized I could start taking my own clients as a personal stylist although I didn’t start that right away. I continued to work different retail jobs as a visual merchandiser manager. My first entrepreneurial venture was when I started doing handmade chokers I would also take requests for custom-painted jackets. I quickly realized that was not for me then took up learning how to crotchet.

I started learning to crotchet as a personal hobby then took a few custom orders and that’s when I came up with the name Irregularwear. I came up with that name because of all the custom work I did, I wanted everything one of a kind so it was “Irregular”. When I got hired to work for Amazon as a personal stylist I started working from home and had more time to work on my brand. I then released my virtual personal styling services and started my journey as a content creator/style influencer.

I created a Youtube channel showcasing my love for fashion and beauty. I also started taking my Instagram seriously where I would post outfit inspiration and videos. I then started building my following and getting paid partnerships working with brands.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say my path hasn’t been super hard but not as smooth.

The hardest thing was mostly finding what I truly wanted to do. Although I knew I wanted a career in fashion or beauty the industry is so big so I was just unsure of where I fit in. I had to start many projects to realize what was for me. Another bump in the road for me was when I worked retail.

Once I became a manager my schedule was all over the place so it was hard for me to make time for my brand. I was also mentally and physically drained from work so I didn’t put much effort into my brand when I was off work. Once I found a full-time job that was flexible and working from home I can now put more time and energy into Irregularwear.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am creative but still work a 9-5. My 9-5 job is not typical as I work as a virtual personal stylist. As far as my personal creative business I am a content creator/ Style influencer. I have a Youtube channel “Irregularwear” where I create content around all things affordable fashion, beauty, and lifestyle.

On my channel I do vlogs and try-on hauls, I also talk about fashion trends. I have a blog where I post virtual style boards and give tips along with linking items for my viewers to purchase. Another place where I create content is Instagram. I get brand deals and create fashion videos showing my community how to style their pieces. You can also find outfit inspiration looks and normally give style tips in my captions. I believe what sets me apart is my fun engaging videos and my editing skills when I create my videos.

Not only do I talk about fashion but I focus on affordable fashion $300 and under. I talk about brands and items in the price range because I want to make sure what I am showcasing is obtainable to my viewers. What I am most proud of is the community I built. I am continuing to build a community of women who love fashion without breaking their budgets.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
One thing that my viewers may not know about me is I am an introvert. Being an introvert is the reason why I love creating content because I am able to still inspire others while still being in my own bubble. I get a lot of people on my socials who think I am very outgoing which I am. I just have a hard time speaking to people without getting high anxiety.
