Life & Work with Tracey Smith of Elkridge, Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracey Smith.

Hi Tracey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 1995, my precious little three-year-old daughter, Trezoree, was diagnosed with a form of leukemia. It was absolutely devastating news. As I watched her battle this cancerous disease, my relationship with God became the focal point of my life. Shortly after my daughter’s 4th birthday, her battle with this cancerous disease ended her precious life. I knew within my heart my daughter was with our Heavenly Father.

Shortly after my daughter’s passing, I began to journal about my life. After months of journaling, I begin to see a story that could possibly become a book. As the years of journaling passed, I was able to document most of my life’s story leading up to the untimely passing of my daughter.

With no professional writing or publishing skills, there was a lot to learn if I wanted my story to be published. I never knew there were so many different tasks involved in publishing a book; from finding a publisher, an editor, a photographer, a graphic designer, and most of all, understanding the business of copyrighting.

After learning the book publishing process, I was able to release my very 1st book “Heaven’s Playground”. My daughter’s life gave me the inspirational tools that I needed to write a book about Heaven and New Beginnings.

After such a huge success with Heaven’s Playground, I decided to write another book. I wanted my second book to be based on the importance of self-beauty, self-worth, and self-respect. I’ve always told myself along with many of my friends to “Be Cute for You”. I’ve always believed that people should value themselves for who they are and become the best versions of themselves for the benefit of themselves only.

My phrase “Be Cute for You” became the title of my second book. Unlike Heaven’s Playground, Be Cute for You is a declaration geared towards inspiring individuals about their self-confidence.

Writing and publishing “Be Cute for You” was exciting and definitely fun. I really realized then the importance of inspiring and motivating others.

Every day I thank God for what He has done in my life. He has shown me my true purpose and the power of His love. I truly love inspiring people and helping them get to their day of New Beginnings.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
After my daughter’s death, I knew that I had to find a way to move forward and regroup. I needed a clean surface and a new way of thinking about life to start my new beginning.

The road for me throughout my journey has been pretty smooth, however, there have been instances along the way where I struggled to keep the faith and believe for better days ahead. Struggling with putting my thoughts on paper and believing in my writing skills were always a concern for me.

Making time for writing was also challenging. Having a full-time job along with raising a family at times became overwhelming. There were many deadline challenges throughout my journey and the financial cost at times became very stressful.

Having a strong faith in God helped me pull through some of the most challenging moments in my journey.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve worked for the Social Security Administration (SSA) for over 25 years. My present job title is a Supervisory Social Insurance Specialist. I currently manage a training unit within our Division of International Operations.

My staff consists of Technical Experts, Assisted Module Managers, Mentors, Program Analysts, and Trainees. We service and work alongside the Foreign Benefit Units throughout the world (Athens, Frankfurt, Rome, Manila, London & Mexico City, and Guadalajara) in processing claimants’ benefits.

I’m most proud of watching my training staff grow and develop into well-trained technicians. I’m also proud of mentoring and inspiring each and every one of my employees throughout their careers.

Throughout my professional career, I have evolved into an inspirational author and entrepreneur. I have also inspired many of my colleagues and staff members to pursue and achieve their own goals and dreams outside of the agency.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love many things about Baltimore, but the one thing that sticks out the most for me is the love and opportunities that Baltimore has offered and extended to many of its artists and dreamers.

The yearly festivals such as The Baltimore Book Festival, Cultural Festivals, Wine and Food Festival along with the Baltimore Farmers Market and Bazaar, gave many artists and entrepreneurs the opportunities to showcase their talents and services.

These festivals and opportunities have given artists and dreamers in Baltimore exposure and the ability to network.

I also love the many hidden gems within our cities such as Harbor East, Little Italy, and Fells Point. The cuisine in Baltimore is amazing and the variety of restaurants and ice-cream shops are endless.

When traveling outside of Baltimore, I love bragging about our delicious blue crab, crab cakes, and seafood. I truly believe our crab cakes are unmatched throughout the country.

If I would mention anything negative about our city, it would be the crime rate. The crime rate in Baltimore is extremely high. I believe the crime rate is partially due to the lack of education and job opportunities. Hopefully, with the new political team in place, we can see a new and improved Baltimore.
