Life & Work with Shon Beverly of Bowie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shon Beverly.

Hi Shon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
My journey all began as a blog dedicated to motherhood. In 2017, I launched to release all the good (and the not-so-good) thoughts about motherhood that I felt guilty about. In the background. I had just got back on my feet from coming out of a horrible business deal in which my salon designer embezzled a ton of $$ and frankly just left me high and dry (6 figures + is what was taken, but we’d be here all day for that story, so I gave the summary lol). On top of this, during that ordeal. I was furloughed while on maternity leave with my firstborn/ eldest son and was trying to figure out how to make money.

What the heck was I going to do?? God knew. I fought myself when starting the blog because I would have to talk to people (introverts unite, lol), but again, God knew! It just seemed like a knockdown after the knockdown. From this blog, I networked with over 40 women-owned businesses/ brands across the DMV, hosted over 20 events focused on bringing the women of my community together for a great time, served as local event correspondent/ press, held my first international event, and more! My blog pushed me to leave my shy ways behind, and not before long. I was invited to lead programs, serve as a local correspondent/ press for local Washington DC events, and guest host at others’ events, and soon, I started thinking I could do even more.

This was not due to me at all. I discovered I had a hidden talent for sewing and design (I got this from my mom). After sharing a few custom pieces on social media, I was invited to design gowns for special events (one being a local award show). And my bow ties were worn by guests at the Stellar Awards during the same year! Everything happened so fast, which is why I keep mentioning God. In true millennial fashion, I have a little ‘Jane of All Trades’ running through me. My business has helped over 20 women-owned businesses/ brands across the DMV achieve their business goals!

Also, in business, my best friend and I are locked into a few businesses together and have been for 7 years; we are only operating under one business relationship, as we have been on a hiatus due to having children back to back. Still, we plan to relaunch very soon and are very excited!

I am the author of one book, founder of the former Pink4Purpose Breast Cancer Organization, and more! Outside of my social/ business life, from 9-5, I am the Contract Manager for my company and am the youngest AA woman (there are only 2 of us, my boss won’t mind me saying this because she knows she’s fly lol) on the Corporate team at my job, and I love it!

While social media has been a great source of business for me, I currently do not use it for business! After so many children, it’s hard not to dedicate yourself to theirs. I noticed myself going into a slump rediscovering talents I had neglected and just going for [my] it and having a great time doing so! I use it to get back to feeling like my true self. I enjoy unfolding myself, daring myself, growing, and evolving! I plan to relaunch my lifestyle blog showing my crazy, fun, super-loving family and friends whom I dote on ever so often, my online store, and who knows, write another book or 3, lol; just seeing where God leads me!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
Not a smooth road, but really, nothing comes easy! The last 2 years, I’d say, have been the most trying, personally. However, that is the process of self-discovery/ acceptance and business evolution (at least for me!). As you genuinely discover more about yourself, you truly learn about life. What works and what does not work? It feels like finally going down the hill of a high roller coaster, and I’m enjoying losing my stomach and laughing!! The freedom I currently feel to press forward with my dreams is so rewarding! It took me a very long time to ‘be.’ So, while it hasn’t been easy, I have been enjoying the ride. I try to state this as often as possible as a reminder to myself that at my next hill, a smile will also end!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What sets me apart from others? Is that just like them; I am a 1 of 1. I have so much greatness in me that no other person possesses, and it’s magical. The same for us all once we believe!

What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my ability to bounce back. My faith roads get rocky, but prayer prevails!

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I am a free-spirited, fun, severely introverted (it’s the bad kind, lol) wife & mother of 4 who enjoys life wholeheartedly! A person who’s always searching for growth and inner enlightenment, keeping God first and letting the chips fall where they may!
