Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Morgan.
Hi Shelby, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I fell in love with music at a very early age watching my father sing in the car and watching people like Hilary Duff and Miley Cyrus on the Disney Channel. Every chance I could I was asking my parents to put me in a talent show, go to karaoke, perform for them in their living room and even started writing my own songs around age 10. I started performing with a cover band in 2015 to gain experience playing live and by 2018, I was putting on my very first show with my own original music. Since then, I was mentored by Nile Rodgers, flying back and forth from here to London until Covid, released 4 EP’s and 2 LP’s and have continued developing my live show and brand into what you see from me today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. Like I mentioned before, I was mentored by Nile Rodgers from 2018-2020 and that was some of the best experiences I have ever had as an artist. I was able to meet and do things within the music industry that I never would have imagined. In 2020, I met a Sony agent who took me under her wing and was setting up a record deal for me with Universal Music when everything shut down and I essentially had to start from scratch. It was one of the worst moments of my life to experience such a high in my career of feeling like I was finally getting where I wanted to, but the universe had different plans for me and looking back I am very happy it worked out the way it was supposed to. I know that if it hadn’t I might’ve lost myself in the music industry hamster wheel.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a musical artist, my most favorite part is the creative behind it. I am very tactile and love world-building. I think I am most proud of the music I have written and hearing from others that my songs have touched or helped them in some way, because it has helped me immensely. The fun part is the creation behind videos, photoshoots and continuing a story through fashion and makeup. I think creating sets for visuals, making all of my own merch and stage outfits sets me apart because everything is made by the artist for the people and in the world of AI, I think there is something more special about receiving something made by human hands and encouraging others to keep creating art on their own.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I would like to think of myself as a risk taker but it is mostly because when I have an idea, I have to execute it and it doesn’t matter what it takes in order for me to do it. I will get it done! That could be because I am neurotic or because I love every part of what I do. Being creative cures my soul. I think the biggest risk I took was choosing to move to London in order to continue networking with people and putting myself out there in rooms where sometimes I wasn’t allowed to be in.
