Life & Work with Ruth Channing of Mt Vernon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Channing.

Hi Ruth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My business, The Ink Spot Press, started in 1980 as a private print studio.
Since 2017 I have realized my dream of hosting a public access studio for intaglio printmaking. We bring technical expertise to printmaking projects so that artists can focus on their creativity without having to learn the whole process.
We hold annual exhibitions that showcase what has been created during the past year or so, bringing it before the public; it also provides a space for printmakers to meet and talk shop.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We don’t receive any outside funding, but nevertheless we try to keep costs low enough so that anyone can afford to work with us.
Our struggle is really just how to keep the lights on while maintaining a low cost to the artists.
People have donated frames and equipment, everyone pitches in.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My own work consists mainly of copperplate engraving, a very demanding and difficult technique. I studied in Paris in the 1960’s with a famous surrealist printmaker, Stanley Hayter.
In the workshop I encourage all forms of printmaking. With the help of my studio manager Ian Jackson, we can print just about anything! We encourage everyone to find their voice whether they are a beginner or a career artist.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Besides chocolate, you mean?
Well,
I get enormous satisfaction from seeing someone discover self expression through printmaking. Also from helping them sell their work in a rather difficult market.
