Life & Work with Multiple Exposures Gallery of Alexandria, VA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Multiple Exposures Gallery.

Hi Multiple Exposures Gallery, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We are celebrating our 40th anniversary this year! Founded in June 1985, we are the longest continuously operating fine art photography gallery in the region. When we celebrated our anniversary in June, the City of Alexandria issued a proclamation recognizing us “as a beacon for all who appreciate the art and craft of photography.” We loved that!

We are located at the Torpedo Factory Art Center and represent the work of 15 fine art photographers. On any given day, visitors to the gallery will find a range of original fine art photographs and photography books. We hold 10 exhibitions a year, often juried by nationally recognized jurors and curators, and host monthly photo critiques open to everyone in the community.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has mostly been smooth, but we do spend a lot of time talking with visitors about the skill and labor it takes to bring an image from capture to hanging on a wall. Today everyone is a photographer with a mobile device, and photos often look impressive on small, backlit screens. But once those same images are printed large for exhibition, the difference is striking. Several of us use our phones for the first shot, too—but there’s a lot of work between that initial capture and something that’s ready to hang.

The nice thing is, we love those conversations. Talking with visitors about process, materials, and seeing their reactions keeps things interesting—and we often learn from them, too. AI has also become a big topic in the gallery: is it a creative tool, or is it taking us too far from what’s real? There are no clear answers, but the back-and-forth reminds us that photography is still evolving, and we’re here to grow along with it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We’re a cooperative gallery made up of 15 artists who specialize in fine art photography. What we’re most proud of is our commitment to presenting high-quality work that spans genres and gives visitors a range of experiences when they walk through our exhibitions. Our hope is that everyone who visits finds something that resonates with them—an image that makes them pause, look a little longer, and reflect on what they’re seeing.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Sharing images that convey the unique ways that each of us at MEG see the world. Put 15 of us in the same small room with our cameras and direct us each to take three images and not one of the images would be the same.

Pricing:
