Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Blakely.
Hi Monica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always enjoyed art and using my creativity. In December of 2013, I was a mom trying to find the balance between work and spending time with my 11 months old at the time. I needed to create a job that would allow me to spend quality time, all while providing for her future. I started off making a wreath for a Christmas gift for my family members and posting a picture online. The very next day, I had ten orders. One thing led to another and people have contacted me to make everything from custom shoes, to photo props to Cornhole boards and more.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It wasn’t easy. To start from your parent’s basement, with a toddler to becoming a successful entrepreneur took A LOT of dedication and hard work. I had to hit the pavement running, I wouldn’t stop my hustle. If someone wanted a pink with purple polka dot pair of shoes, I told them “sure!” And I did my very first pair. Business has grown and over the past eight years, there were days where I went on 3hrs of sleep to make sure I got orders done. In 2020 we made the decision to sew masks. Except we wanted to give back as well, we donated one mask for every one mask sold to first responders. We sewed over 15,000 masks in 2020- donating over 7,500 of them to local Drs, nurses and facilities. We would wake up at 6am every morning and sew until 3am everyday for 45 days straight to get the job done. We wanted to make sure the front-line workers got what they needed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We create some amazing creations:
Signs and more
Most proud of donating 7500+ masks to first responders during the pandemic. As well as creating custom shoes for the local professional football teams, players, etc.
What sets us apart from other companies: we can do anything custom. We’ve had clients ask to merge beer logos with Cornhole, not a problem.
We got it! If a client wants rose gold glitter high heels for their wedding with their name on them- we can do it. Want a costume to look like your favorite comic, but no store makes it- we do! We create everything from hand in Maryland.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Every year, month, and day we constantly pivot with the culture. In the next 5-10 years, I plan on hitting a goal where I have an item in every professional sports team in us. My goal is to show my daughter how Determination, hard work and sacrifice can provide a blessed life and be able to spend the quality time she needs until she’s an adult.
