Life & Work with Marli Frazier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marli Frazier.

Marli, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started taking pictures in elementary school taking a disposable camera around with me everywhere I went and just taking pictures of my friends. My mom put me in a photography class at Prince George’s Community College, where I learned how to develop my film. All through grade school, I was always taking photos or recording and making short videos of myself and my friends. In 9th and 10th grade, I helped shoot and was the editor for my final class project documentaries. I got my first DSLR in 12th grade and made a Senior video recapping our prom, graduation, and end-of-the-year party. After I graduated high school, I worked with one of my friends, a music artist. I was a part of his music group, shot all the photos and videos, and designed all their graphics. When I went to college in Miami, I met a fashion photographer, and he became one of my closest friends and mentors. I started to take photography seriously and put more thought into my shoots. After being in Miami, I moved back home and started shooting events and doing music interviews. I always wanted to incorporate music into anything I was doing. From there, I started getting more bookings and collaborating with more photographers and event promoters in the city. My specialty now is portraits, but I also want to get into concert photography and shooting short films.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of my struggles was thinking that my work wasn’t good enough or always comparing myself to the next photographer instead of learning from them.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a photographer, videographer, and graphic designer. I specialize in portraits and logo design.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for someone just starting out is don’t compare yourself to anyone and just learn your lane. Learn from others. What’s for you is for you and will work for you, not something anyone else has.
