Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Driskill.
Hi Maggie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I went into cosmetology school in 2010 and graduated in the spring of 2011. I started with Haircuttery in July 2011 as a receptionist and then became a stylist in August once I got my state board license. Throughout my 11 years at Haircuttery, I was a Senior Designer Stylist, an Assistant Salon Leader, Salon Leader, and a Regional Training Artist on the education team. That is really what sparked my interest in developing other stylists to build up their own technical skill set so that they can achieve their own goals. In 2022, I decided to branch out and started at Image Is Salon where I still am today. I am a Level 5 Stylist as well as an Associate Trainer. I absolutely love it at my salon. I love the team, I love training and working with our associates, and being part of developing the education for the salon has been extremely rewarding. I also work part-time as a Redken Artist where I travel to other salons to train stylists on new products, techniques, and ways to build up their own businesses.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been the smoothest road. There were a lot of times where I made mistakes or had clients come back for redos that made me question my career choice. And a few times where I almost wanted to give up and quit. Of course now I am extremely glad that I didn’t, but I think the biggest challenge that I faced was the pandemic. Being out of work for 3 months was extremely hard and then coming back to adhere to strict guidelines also made things very difficult. And even now the beauty industry post-Covid has been vastly different from what it was before.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in custom dimensional color with a science based approach. I am most known for utilizing color theory and hair science to achieve the most flattering looks for my clients while keeping their hair in its best possible condition. I am extremely proud of being a Redken Certified Hair Colorist and having deep knowledge of the science and chemistry that goes behind hair color, which is what sets me apart from others.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I definitely took a huge risk when I decided to leave the corporate salon world and go into the private salon space. I was going from somewhere I had been for over a decade and had grown significantly in that time, but I felt like I had done all of the growth that I was going to achieve there and was ready to find more opportunities to allow me to continue to advance in my career.
