Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Truhlar.
Hi Kate, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always had the desire to make. From a young age, if I wanted to learn something creative, I taught myself. I remember making a quilt for my college dorm room with no prior knowledge of sewing. When I had to decide on a major, I chose art and studied Metalsmithing under the direction of Jan Baum at Towson University.
I learned so much more than how to solder a ring. I learned what inspired me, I learned discipline, and I learned the fundamentals of design. Each of these things was invaluable in my development as an artist. After college, I knew I wanted to work on a larger scale so I took a job creating storefront and in-store installations at Anthropologie. That work evolved into merchandising, which then evolved into designing people’s homes.
I used to offer my clients a floral arrangement as a way to thank them once a job was completed. Those same clients started asking me to do flowers for baby showers, then weddings, and it was there I found my passion for floral. I love looking back on the course of my career and seeing how each tiny evolution brought me here.
No plan really, just a pursuit of passion.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There isn’t a ton of certainty going into a creative field, especially as an entrepreneur. Leaving the corporate world was a giant leap of faith and didn’t pan out for me right away. It took time, patience, and practice. But all the while I just had this innate lack of fear and the confidence to jump in feet first regardless.
I’m also very fortunate to have a partner who wholeheartedly supported my pursuits. There were people along the way that didn’t believe in me, but for the most part, I have been surrounded by women in the industry who showed me what it looks like to celebrate one another’s success. I live for this!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Floral Designer that specializes in Weddings and Events. I am mostly self-taught but have gained quite a bit of experience in my years freelancing and working for various retail florists. My client relationships are very important to me, and I pride myself on getting to know what makes my couples unique.
It’s become an intuitive process and that makes my couples feel really good, knowing that they chose someone who just kinda gets it. As much as this is a special day for my clients, each wedding is also an opportunity to reinvent myself creatively, hone my skills, and inspire myself and others.
My style is warm, ethereal, modern, and romantic. I do it all, and I love it all.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
For anyone looking for a Wedding Florist, I’m easy to find on social media, or through my website www.katetruhlar.com. I’m always inspired by collaborations and love meeting new people within my field.
Photoshoots are a great way to pull a variety of vendors from the wedding world into one room, so that’s been my favorite way to spend my time creatively outside of work. Reach out and let’s get something going!
