Today we’d like to introduce you to Karina Kennedy.
Hi Karina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Art always resonated with me, even as a young child. Being able to see art that have lasted through decades has always caught my attention, how incredible is it to see what people have created so long ago yet it still leaves you with so many emotions. When I picked up photography in school, it came to me naturally, I always had a ton of ideas and so much passion for creating. And while I would’ve loved to say that I went straight into a big photography career right after school, the truth is that it was in the background. The idea of becoming a full time artist is intimidating! However, once I stopped doubting myself and fully leaned into my passion, things just fell into place. Here I am, a full time photographer, something that felt like a far away dream just a few years ago!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Running your own business is never a smooth sailing. Everything comes with trial and error, and there are things that I had to learn the hard way (like how much it costs to have a business!). I had to work on my workflow, consistent style of editing, and how I manage all the business aspects. Photography is also changing all the time with new equipment and trends, being able to switch things up on the go is a must for an artist!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in Wedding and Portrait Photography! When it comes to my style, I am known for my dreamy, moody photographs that are full of candid emotions. It’s really important to me to capture the dynamic of each one of my couples, so I always have my couples interact with each other instead of setting up stiff and “posey” photos. I want my couples to be able to look back at these photographs and see themselves, not a dull version of their personalities.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Such a good question! I am a fan of the Vendor Table podcast, I think that podcast is incredibly relatable and it helps to ground myself when I need it. It’s a reminder that other professional vendors go through similar things, and have similar thoughts. It helps when I am overthinking! Aside from that, I am a big reader, it helps me to relax my mind at times when I need it most. Being a business owner, your mind is always doing a million tasks, and sometimes you just need to pull away and breathe.
