Today we’d like to introduce you to John Videler.
Hi John, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My photography journey began in my parents’ photography studio in Westport, Connecticut, where I learned the craft from my father at an early age. Working in the film era taught me the importance of technical skill, patience, and making people feel comfortable in front of the camera.
Today, I’m a multi-genre photographer, which means no two days are ever the same. I photograph portraits, corporate events, architecture, interior design, real estate, and aerial imagery as an FAA-certified drone pilot. I enjoy adapting my approach to each project, whether I’m capturing the personality of a business owner, the atmosphere of a live event, or the design details of a beautifully crafted space. Every assignment is different, and that’s what keeps photography exciting for me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Photography is a creative business, but it’s also a business, and learning how to balance the two has been one of the biggest challenges. There have been slow seasons, changes in technology, and the constant need to adapt as the industry has evolved from film to digital, drones, and now AI.
One thing I’ve learned is that every challenge is an opportunity to grow. I’ve always tried to keep learning, invest in new equipment and techniques, and expand into different types of photography. Being able to photograph everything from portraits and events to architecture, interiors, and aerial imagery has helped me build a business that continues to evolve while doing work I genuinely enjoy.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in creating photographs that help people and businesses tell their story. My work ranges from portraits and corporate events to architecture, interiors, real estate, and aerial photography as an FAA-certified drone pilot. I enjoy the variety, and I think working across different genres has made me a stronger photographer.
What I’m most proud of is the long-term relationships I’ve built with my clients. Many have trusted me with their photography for years, and I don’t take that for granted.
What sets me apart is my ability to connect with people and understand what they’re trying to communicate. Whether I’m photographing a person, an event, or a beautifully designed space, my goal is always to create images that feel authentic, tell a story, and leave a lasting impression.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a great kid! I was and still am very observant about things around me. For example, a walk to the mailbox and I had to stop and watch a butterfly getting nectar from a flower. I actually videotaped it.
