Donell, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into firearms training began out of both personal passion and a deep sense of responsibility. I wasn’t raised around guns—in fact, I grew up in the church in a household where even toy guns weren’t allowed. I wasn’t surrounded by military veterans or law enforcement officers, so firearms were not part of my upbringing at all.
As I got older, though, I developed a strong interest in personal protection and safety, which led me into over 20 years of experience in the security field, including serving as a Special Police Officer and a Correctional Officer. Through that work, I saw firsthand how crucial it is not only to handle firearms safely but to understand the legal and practical responsibilities that come with carrying one.
Over time, I noticed a significant gap between people simply owning firearms and truly understanding how to handle them safely and legally. That gap became my calling.
In 2021, my wife and I started Trusty Training Solutions with the mission of delivering high-quality, approachable training that empowers everyday people—not just law enforcement or seasoned shooters—to protect themselves and their loved ones responsibly. What sets us apart is that we don’t run a “boot camp” atmosphere. Instead, we focus on education, confidence building, and real-world application.
From teaching basic firearm safety to helping students navigate complex carry laws, our business has grown through word of mouth, community trust, and a commitment to treating each student like family. Today, Trusty Training Solutions has helped hundreds of Maryland residents earn their permits and gain the knowledge and confidence they need to be responsible gun owners.
It’s been incredibly rewarding to turn our shared passion into a business that makes a real difference in people’s lives and helps strengthen the safety and security of our community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road, but it’s been an incredibly rewarding one.
We actually started Trusty Training Solutions during the pandemic, which brought unique challenges right from the beginning. Navigating health restrictions, finding safe ways to hold classes, and reassuring people who were understandably anxious made those early days difficult.
Beyond the pandemic, there have been other challenges, too. The firearms industry comes with a lot of regulations, strong opinions, and misconceptions. As someone who wasn’t raised around guns, I’ve had to work hard to earn trust and show people that our focus is on safety, education, and responsible ownership.
Running a business also means learning how to market effectively, manage expenses, and balance time between teaching and operations. It can be exhausting—but every time I see a student leave feeling more confident and prepared, it reminds me why I started this journey.
Despite the bumps along the way, helping people gain knowledge, skills, and peace of mind has made it all worthwhile.

At Trusty Training Solutions, we specialize in firearms training for individuals seeking their Maryland Wear and Carry Permit, as well as other certifications like the Utah CFP and multi-state permits. But our work goes far beyond teaching people how to shoot. We’re dedicated to equipping everyday people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to stay safe and protect what matters most.
In addition to firearms training, we also provide Maryland Security Guard Training and Security Guard Services. Our MPCTC-approved curriculum prepares individuals for careers in the security industry, covering essential topics like conflict resolution, situational awareness, legal compliance, report writing, and use-of-force protocols. We’re proud to help build a well-trained security workforce that contributes to safer communities across Maryland.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memories are really simple but meaningful—they’re all about spending time with my family and making memories together. Whether it was family dinners, church events, or just being around each other, those moments shaped who I am.
That’s something I take a lot of joy in continuing with my own family today. Creating memories and cherishing time together is still one of the most important parts of my life.
