Life & Work with Dominique King of Hyattsville, MD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique King

Hi Dominique, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
A few years ago back when I was plant-based, I had an idea to become a resource for vegan eats throughout the DMV that included full service restaurants, grab and go options, and recipes that you can make at home. In August 2018, I got into a car accident that shifted my perspective on life and time and that catapulted me into my content journey. What originally began as me writing blogs, turned into me stepping out of my comfort zone and putting myself on camera to cook, put a face behind my opinions, and take my food journey on the road.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey as a vegan content creator has been one of the most rewarding challenges of my life. When I was a faceless food reviewer, I enjoyed the lack of physical identity. Then around the pandemic, I lost all inspiration and hadn’t posted to the page or paid it any mind for a while. Until one day in the middle of the night, creativity struck me to leverage my resources and push myself back into my creative space. Since then, I may deal with personal issues or losses that rob my energy or remove my focus, so I have to make sure that I keep my eye on the prize and keep pushing when life pushes through to test you. At the end of the day, pushing my message which is veganism is such a wide world to benefit from is my propeller and keeps me going. Also, since I decided to widen my reach from being strictly DMV-centered and leveraging my content to reflect my domestic and international travels, I find myself consistently working on new ways to get on the road and back on somebody’s plane!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I create vegan food content that includes vegan restaurants that are local to me, vegan food and restaurants that are not local whether it’s a few states away or a few continents away, vegan recipes that can be seasonal, and mocktail recipes that are a reflection of my current non-alcoholic journey. What sets me apart from others include my travel content, my Mocktail content, and my inclusion of the color pink into my work. The color, multi-cultural inclusion into my travel content, my honesty, and my overall intentions put me into a space of my own which is what I love.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is my message of veganism being accessible, easy, fun, and delicious, having the ability to inspire skeptics, potential vegans, and active vegans alike. A lot of people have a misconception that veganism=no flavor which is completely false. Those that are on the fence about veganism can see that you can transition and still have delicious meals. People who are transitioning into veganism will be better prepared for the lifestyle and have the tools of tips, recipes, and restaurants to try out. And those who are active vegans can have the ability to have additional recipe inspiration and someone to validate their experience. You can find full-service 4-star vegan restaurants, but you need to know where to go, and guiding those along in their journey is my largest driver.
