Today we’d like to introduce you to DeWayne Alston.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Soul City Radio began from a simple love of music and a desire to create a space where independent artists could get their music heard, discovered, and appreciated beyond traditional radio.
What started as a series of shows on BlogTalkRadio grew into something much bigger. Over the years, Soul City Radio has evolved into a platform that celebrates classic and contemporary music while also giving independent artists an opportunity to reach new listeners. We’ve remained committed to creating an authentic listening experience rather than simply following mainstream trends.
Building an independent station for more than a decade has meant learning every side of the business—from programming and technology to marketing, promotion, audience development, and finding creative ways to remain sustainable. It has been a hands-on journey, but that independence is also what makes Soul City Radio special.
Today, Soul City Radio continues to represent the music, culture, and spirit that inspired it in the first place. We’re proud of how far we’ve come, but we’re even more excited about where we’re going—expanding our audience, supporting independent talent, and continuing to build a lasting digital home for soul, R&B, jazz, and the culture surrounding it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has definitely not been a smooth one. Internet radio has always had to compete with traditional radio for artists’ attention, as well as allowing them to see it as a viable option for their music. Naturally independent artists, who do things on their own as well, gravitated to it right away. As the years went on and streaming services became popular, that became yet another platform we have had to compete with. Throughout it all we have been able to build a global listenership that provides a distinct advantage for artists.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I officially serve as the station’s programming director. It’s my responsibility to ensure that all of the music and radio shows that our station carries is properly programmed and scheduled accordingly.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I am also a photographer. I would even that’s where my truest passion lies.
