Life & Work with Anthony And Tisha McFarland of Bryans Road

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony And Tisha McFarland.

Hi Anthony and Tisha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Honey Bun Cake Factory was formed in April 2012 by owners Anthony and Tisha McFarland. We make different flavors of honey bun cakes. If you go to some of the mom and pop restaurants in eastern North Carolina, they sometimes sell honey bun cakes. Honey bun cakes taste like those honey bun cakes you buy in vending machines, except our desserts are actual cake! HBCF sells classic honey bun cakes and developed over 80 different flavors of honey bun cakes over the years.

How we got started: Tisha would bake honey bun cakes for family and friends for free, of course. Anthony noticed how much everyone loved the cake, so he thought we should sell them at marketplace at Gallaudet University. Anthony and Tisha sold out of cake within the hour! We began selling the cakes to restaurants. Within the first year, our cakes were in 20 restaurants.

We opened our storefront in April 2020 in Bryans Road, MD (Charles County) right when the Pandemic began. Today, our honey bun cakes are in 100 restaurants throughout the Washington D.C. metro area. We have our own custom cake mix, so customers can make their very own Classic Honey Bun Cake in their home. You can catch us at various festivals and events throughout the east coast.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We opened our storefront in 2020 when the Pandemic began. We were afraid to open because we thought we would not succeed. The Charles County community was so supportive. They came and supported our store and are still patrons today.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
We are Christians and have a strong faith in God. We believe in a lot of prayer, so we would consider that good luck.
