Life & Work with Amy Hooper of Howard County, Gaithersburg, Maryland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Hooper.

Amy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I always knew I wanted to help people. There is so much suffering in this world, so any difference I could make by giving back seemed like my path forward. I opened Another Look at Healing, LLC – Gaithersburg Counseling Center in 2009 as a solo psychotherapist and 17 years later it has grown into a thriving boutique therapy practice with an incredible group of highly experienced therapists. My team and I work with teens and adults individually as well as couples, and families. We draw on a range of approaches to best fit for each client such as trauma informed care, attachment-based work, intimacy and infidelity counseling using CBT, somatic therapy, art therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and EMDR. My practice often supports people navigating anxiety, trauma, self-esteem, relationships, depression, life transitions, and the quiet difficulty of speaking up for what you need and the desire to good about yourself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A small boutique therapy practice faces many challenges, from AI to unfair wages from insurance companies, challenging mental health policies nationwide and even big virtual platforms for therapy impact small practices. We are determined to keep helping those in need, despite these challenges.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are known for high quality therapy from experienced and compassionate therapists. We specialize in helping teens, individual adults, couples and families. Our therapy clients are regular, everyday people who are struggling with life’s stressors such as: anxiety and depression, overwhelming stress, low self esteem, relationship or intimacy problems, past trauma and life stressors.
If you are stuck feeling anxious, depressed, stressed or unhappy, talking to a non-judgmental, caring therapist from our center in DC, MD or VA can be the first step for you to start to improve how you feel and your relationships with others. We’re committed to providing therapy and counseling to individuals who want to change their lives or understand themselves in a new way. Our therapists are all LGBTQIA+ allies and welcome clients from all ethnicities, religious faiths, nationalities, gender identities, ages, races, sizes, abilities, and sexual orientations.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The stigma around therapy and counseling is decreasing, and I hope that continues. The landscape of therapy is also changing as people look to AI for advise, companionship and easy answers to very complicated issues. As big VC companies continue to grow and leave less room for private practices, I hope clients can still find highly qualified, experienced therapist that specialize in areas to help them. It’s all about what’s best for the client, and we don’t plan to lose sight of that!
