Life & Work with Allison Balanc

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Balanc. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Allison Balanc is a D.C.-based Neo-Soul singer, songwriter, certified vocal coach, educator, producer, and entrepreneur. Creating music has always played a major role in her self-expression. A GRAMMYs Recording Academy member and New York Vocal Coaching Academy alum, she has lent her talent to multiple artists’ projects.

In 2007, Allison was signed to the Grammy award-winning label Compound Entertainment; after winning “Neyo’s Talent Search”. Then again in 2012, the songstress caught the ear of entertainment manager, William “Malachai” Johns. She then won the “Are You the Lipstick Talent Search”. Allison is also an 8x Washington Area Music Award nominee including the 2021 Washington Area Music Educator Award.

Allison released her first EP, Change of Plans, in 2015. She followed up with her second project, Lost and Found, in 2017. Allison performed her first live debut of the project at the W Hotel DC’s POV Live concert series. Her performance became the highest-grossing in the series and her company, Allison Balanc Productions began an ongoing relationship with the venue.

Allison Balanc Productions has expanded in its offerings; providing creative direction, vocal session work, vocal coaching, songwriting, and production prompting Allison to leave her corporate career for good in 2020. ABP is also contracted with The Musicianship, a DC-based non-profit that brings music programs to inner-city schools that do not have the funding. Her latest business venture, Driven Women Publishing- a publishing and music licensing company, is set to launch by the end of 2021.

Allison’s latest work is a series of songs, #SocialDistanceBae; released amidst the Covid-19 pandemic in April 2020. Stemming from this series, Allison collaborated with famous Baduist, Durand Bernarr and released a remix of her song, “Friendzone” in October 2020, garnering over 100K streams via Spotify. She continues to focus on expanding her craft through multiple collaborations with various R&B artists. Allison believes we learn the most through collaboration and as artists we are never done learning, expanding, and growing.

Allison draws inspiration from Jazz, Soul, early 90’s Hip-Hop, and R&B. She believes in the deep impact that musical entertainment provides and works meticulously to develop a unique blend of sounds that is not only cathartic for her but more importantly meaningful, empathetic, and enjoyable for listeners.

Allison strives to utilize her blessings, work ethic, and artistry to innovate, nurture and inspire. She believes it is our responsibility to use the gifts we are given to improve the world around us. The positive, reciprocal cycle shared from creator to listener is what pushes her to keep creating and doing what she loves.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been easy but I’m a firm believer in if I fall down 8 times, I get up 9. The journey of a vocalist is the inner journey as it acts as a mirror to our innermost workings. As I learn more about myself, I become a better musician and am able to make more of an impact in my music.

Overcoming imposter syndrome, comparisons, etc, general insecurities that I think most artists experience at some point. I’ve come to realize the one real obstacle has been myself, and getting out of my own way and believing that I have everything it takes.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a vocal coach, singer, songwriter, and producer. I am proud to say I have been vocal coaching completely full-time since January 2020. The fact that I am active as a singer, songwriter, and producer allow me to appreciate music from all sides and I think it helps me reach my clients in a well-rounded way.

Any big plans?
I have started a second company that I plan on unrolling in 2022; I don’t want to get too in-depth regarding it but it’s a passion project and I’m excited to offer opportunities to other people through this venture.
