Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Woody Holland-Davis of Glen Burnie

Woody Holland-Davis shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Woody, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Gardening and landscaping! More specifically native gardening. I’m trying to do my part in saving the bees. I also get satisfaction in noticing the increase of wildlife in my yard. Seeing caterpillars morph into butterflies is exhilarating.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Aloha! My name is Woody and I am a husband, plant enthuiprofessional freelance photographer. I specialize in portrait and event photography, but my passion is in nature. I believe my interest in scenic photography is what makes my work stand out, especially when I’m doing outdoor portraits. Even with event photography, I like to say “I don’t just take pictures, I capture moments.”

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I lost my father when I was 11 years old. As tragic as that moment was, it opened my eyes to see how nothing in life is promised. It made me learn to appreciate life and everything it has to offer.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
In the beginning of my photography career, I had dreams of moving to LA and becoming a “celebrity photography”. I remember booking a one way ticket and taking only my camera and some clothes. Unfortunately, my plan of finding a stable job and housing didn’t quite go how I envisioned. Eventually I found employment, but wasn’t able to secure a place to live. After a few months, I was on the verge of being homeless and I made the decision to swallow my pride and come back home. Although that experience wasn’t as successful as I wanted it to be, it didn’t break me. Within weeks of moving back home, I found a stable job at a photography company and I started booking gigs again to get my confidence back.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
One belief I’m committed to is finding beauty in everything and everyone. Often, I have clients that would say “make me look this way” or “make me look that way”. Instead of trying to change how they look, I try to find that one thing that makes them special and focus on that more.

A project that I’m committed to is opening my own creative studio space. I want to have a place where creatives of all backgrounds can come and be able to complete their projects in a professional and artsy environment, whether it be photography, videography, or any other outlet of art.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when it’s just me, my camera, and nature.
