Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Sherri DePollar of Laurel, MD

We recently had the chance to connect with Sherri DePollar and have shared our conversation below.

Sherri, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
What makes me lose track of time—and find myself again—is music.

When I’m listening, everything else fades out. I’m not thinking about what’s next or what just happened—I’m just in it. The rhythm, the lyrics, the feeling of it all takes over.

And when it stops, I feel more grounded. Like I’ve hit reset. Music helps me step away from the noise and come back to myself, clearer and more present.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Sherri DePollar, aka DJ Lotus, creator and host of Innovative Soul Sessions—a show dedicated to soulful, independent music you rarely hear on mainstream radio. The show airs globally on the UK’s Global Soul Radio and from the beautiful Tobyhanna, PA, on Reewind Radio Network (97.5 FM WRRF and iHeartRadio).

However, radio is just one part of my life. I’m also a jewelry maker and designer, a full-time professional, and most importantly, a proud mother. Balancing all these roles keeps me grounded and inspired. Whether I’m curating fresh music, crafting unique jewelry, or juggling everyday life, my passion is connecting with people through authentic creativity and soulful expression.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
The person who saw me clearly before I could see myself was my mother—my best friend and my biggest supporter. She always believed in me and pushed me to be better in everything I do. Her faith in me gave me strength and confidence, even when I doubted myself. She recently passed away, and I miss her dearly every day. Her love and encouragement continue to guide me, and I will carry her spirit with me in everything I pursue.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self:

“Be patient and trust your journey. You’re stronger and more capable than you realize, and everything you’re going through is shaping the person you’re meant to become.”

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
A cultural value I protect at all costs is empathy. For me, it’s not just about being kind—it’s about really seeing people, hearing them, and holding space for what they’re feeling. It’s how I build trust, how I connect, and how I stay true to who I am. In a world that moves fast and often forgets to care, empathy is something I refuse to let go of.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that I truly loved to help others—that I gave from the heart and showed up when it mattered. That I used my time, energy, and resources to make a difference, big or small. I want to be remembered as a philanthropist in spirit and in action—someone who cared deeply, lifted others up, and left the world a little better than I found it.
