Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Mary Kendall of HoCo

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mary Kendall. Check out our conversation below.

Mary, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
#sourdoughlife!
I jumped into the sourdough world back in April when I attempted to make my own sourdough starter. I was close to giving up but then it all worked out and I have not looked back. It’s been a fun and challenging ride with constant experimenting and trying new things. I love it!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Mary Kendall, the author of four published novels with a fifth scheduled for 2026 and several published short stories. I write fiction that is gothicky and weird and generally involves a mystery of some sort. A question to be answered.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Lies. Once trust is eroded, it’s near impossible to build it back. It can *maybe* be rebuilt but truth can be hard to come by. Yet…there’s always hope that the element of truth can make it happen.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Hang on. Change is the only constant so this too shall pass, whatever the “this too” is.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Two: don’t use prologues and don’t write in first person point of view.
(But go into a bookstore and pick up any bestseller to find prologues and first person POV. Smile.)

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
She could really spin a good yarn.
