We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kennedy Ringgold. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Kennedy , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Honestly A normal day for me right now is a bit out of the norm. I rescued a Precious Brindle Staffordshire terrier back in January and she ended up being pregnant and giving birth to 10 puppies at the end of February. Since then, our home has basically turned into a foster home ! my partner and I have re-homed 3 so far , but we are still working towards finding good homes for the rest of the puppies.
So! I tend to 7 puppies their Momma and 4 cats first thing in the morning. Then I head over to my studio in Bolton hill and spend most of my day creating! Working on personal art work, commissions and recording my processes to create online content for my instagram!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kennedy Ringgold. I am a Baltimore based painter, Muralist , and also a tattooist! I have a private studio space that i work from in Baltimore’s Unity Hall. At the end of April after working on for 6+ months i recently finished a huge historical portrait of former Mayor Catherine Pugh, that now lives in city hall as a part of Mayor Brandon scott’s 2024Mayor Portrait competition ! I was one of 5 artists that were chosen out of 170+ Submissions to be commissioned and receive $20,000 to paint a 4×5 foot oil painted portrait one of the most recent past 5 Baltimore City mayors. That hadn’t had their portraits painted and hung in city hall per tradition. This project was a huge accomplishment for me and i am so honored to have been chosen to essentially be a part of Baltimore’s history forever.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I would say the part of me that has served its purpose is the overly humble , introverted and shy side. As of lately I’ve realized in order to receive the support i really want from others, and to open new doors for all of the opportunities i hope to receive I have to not only be confident in my work but confident in my self, I had to learn to be outspoken and bold and advocate for myself because confidence is truly the key!
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I would say that the struggles of life in general and being an entrepreneur don’t necessarily end but you get better at pivoting and persevering through these things. And that perseverance is what will get you through to where you want to be. The journey to success isn’t linear so all of the ups and downs are fully necessary to reach your goals so you have to embrace every aspect of the journey both good and bad.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. Absolutely. I always show up as my most authentic self wherever i go. That is one if the most important things to me.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Although this is something I am already work ping on , I would stop procrastinating, and let go of being a perfectionist. procrastination definitely gets the best of us at times. There are a-lot of things that I want to do with my art that i still haven’t done and at times it can be overwhelming thinking about all of those different things i want to accomplish and how/ when i should start that it gets to the point where i feel mentally , and creatively burnt-out. I am definitely working towards just getting out and doing instead of thinking and contemplating all of my time away!
