Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Chris Jenkins of Martinsburg, WV

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Chris Jenkins. Check out our conversation below.

Chris, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I would say, outside looking in, people may think that what we do is just show up and perform, at times. There is so much more to it, especially as an independent artist. We have to write the music from the ground up. A lot of attention goes into making sure that when it’s heard hundreds or thousands of times, that there are very few, if any mistakes, studio or live.

The marketing is huge for us, as well. We rely heavily on word of mouth, but also on making content that people want to view/engage with.

Money is certainly something that we don’t see much, if any of, as an independent. We put what we do receive right back into the band. Recording or merch takes priority over seeing funds ourselves.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Chris. Founder of the Martinsburg, WV based metal band, Koluna. We formed during the pandemic in June of 2020. We started playing out a bit in May 2021. We’ve played with Atilla, Gemini Syndrome, Texas Hippie Coalition, A Killer’s Confession, Cultus Black, Half Heard Voices, and a few other touring bills!

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My grandmother who passed away in August of 2024. She was always proud of all of my accomplishments and seemingly, almost always, expected great things. I do what I can daily to continue to honor her.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Just keep going. No matter what, things will work out as they are intended. Worry less on the future and focus on the now.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
All adults are just big kids winging it through life.

I, as many of my friends do, still find great joy in many things we enjoyed when we were young. Still a gamer. Still try to play sports when I can. Even my musical tastes, while evolved, have stayed in a particular ballpark. It’s good to take joy in simple things and not feel like you have to keep up with society, other than making sure your bills are paid. Being happy and content is what matters.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
Knowing that I have extended time off and nothing to answer to. It helps to recharge and regroup mentally when you can.
