We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jamal Love. Check out our conversation below.
Jamal, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I recently joined a flag football league here in D.C. We play on Saturday mornings and it’s been really fun scratching the competitive itch. I’ve played sports my whole life so I enjoy getting out there staying active, catching some passes, and talking a little bit of trash.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the owner of Art of Love Gallery. I’d call ourselves a nomadic gallery, as we don’t have a physical location at the moment. The gallery operates primarily through online sales, curated street pop-ups, art shows, and participation in festivals and other events. I started the gallery as a way to continue the legacy that my parents began before I was even born. They bought and sold Black art to their friends and peers, and to no surprise, I grew up in a house filled with it. That early exposure to positive imagery and creativity had a great impact on me as a young Black male. Recognizing the impact it had on me, I knew I wanted to share that same experience with others by helping them collect and celebrate Black art.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I’ve realized that in any type of relationship, if one person gives more than the other over an extended period of time, it can damage the bond. It can lead to exhaustion and a sense that their time and energy aren’t being valued.
In any meaningful relationship, there will be times when one person gives more than the other. What’s important in those moments is having the self-awareness to recognize the imbalance and communicate that you see and appreciate the effort the other person is putting in. Acknowledging that someone may be carrying more of the load can go a long way in maintaining that bond.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Never lose the childlike qualities within yourself. As we grow older, it’s easy to become jaded by the weight of responsibilities, obligations, and the unexpected challenges life inevitably throws our way. But holding onto a sense of playfulness, curiosity, and wonder can be rewarding. Being silly or goofy, even in small moments, can bring joy, especially during low points. It can serve as a reminder not to take everything so seriously and to reconnect with a lighter, more hopeful version of ourselves. That spark is something worth protecting.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
Drawing from within art, this is a very interesting question. Interests and trends in art are often highly subjective, frequently shaped by a small, influential group. One example is the rise of NFTs, non-fungible tokens, which surged in popularity during the pandemic. At that time, creators embraced NFTs as a new way to connect with audiences and tap into the growing digital marketplace, especially while much of the world was in lockdown. In an increasingly online environment, many consumers viewed NFTs as the next frontier in buying and experiencing art. In 2021, Christie’s even recorded a $69 million sale of an NFT, reflecting the massive interest in NFTs.
There are certainly aspects of NFTs that could hold long-term value in the art world. However, today they are rarely discussed at the rate they once were. Ask yourself, when was the last time you seriously thought about NFTs before reading this? That silence will tell you a lot. To me, the difference between a fad and a meaningful shift lies in the ability to evoke lasting emotional feelings. Great artists move us through their use of materials, message, presence, and background. There’s something tangible we absorb through direct experience and understanding context. With digital works like NFTs, that emotional connection can be a bit harder to achieve. Additionally, there’s an “out of sight, out of mind” quality that, unlike physical artworks, NFTs are not easily or consistently displayed, making them easier to forget.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
Family has always been incredibly important to me, and I’m grateful to have such a strong foundation in that area of my life. One clear example is the gallery, which my family has been extremely helpful with. While there are certainly stressful moments, especially when trying to maintain momentum and pursue growth, knowing that I’m doing it alongside people I care about most makes it deeply rewarding. Spending time with my parents or sister, whether we’re unwinding or simply enjoying a laugh, is when I feel most centered and at peace.
