Jae of Baltimore City on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Jae shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Jae, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity is most important to me. You never know who is watching. It’s best to be yourself and treat people how you want to be treated at all times!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! Im Jae. I’m a musical Artist from Baltimore, MD. I make pop/R&B and I’m working on dipping into other genres! If you’re nostalgic for 2000s pop, I’m your girl. If you like to feel heard, I’m your girl. And if you like mythical vibes, I’m your girl!!! I released my first EP, WHTEVR, in 2023. It’s out now on all platforms. I’m currently working on another EP that should come out before my album!

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My Mom, sister and friends taught me the most about work. They’re always working and going after what they want. I love that I’m surrounded by go-getters, It’s daily inspiration for me!

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
During the process of working on my EP and music video, I was so close to giving up. It almost didn’t come out honestly. I was self conscious and there were hiccups along the way. But I just thought about how much I would’ve regretted scrapping the project and how mad at myself I would’ve been if I let one mishap get me down. I’m proud of what I put out and I’m excited to make so much more!

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
Being kind is free, being nice is not! It literally costs you nothing to treat people with kindness and respect. Just like you and me, people want to be seen and heard. It can actually lift you up as well and help you connect more with others on a deeper level. Being nice on the other hand, that can cost you more than money in my opinion. Anyone can be nice when they want something! It takes a lot of effort to keep that up if that’s not who you are. You can also imagine how you’ll be treated once you stop being “nice”. Kindness only requires your compassion and honesty.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What will you regret not doing?
I would regret not trying things at least once. While trying new things can be scary, they can also be very rewarding. Sometimes the outcome isn’t always great but you learned something about yourself. You can apply those lessons all the way down the line. You never know what you’re truly capable of if you don’t try!
