We recently had the chance to connect with Jada’s Canvas and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jada’s, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I love doing adventurous things like going on hikes, amusement parks, and going to museums.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! My name is Jada and I am a makeup artist located in Cockeysville, MD. My brand is called Jada’s Canvas and I specialize in full/creative glam. From photoshoots, proms, weddings, to holiday looks I love doing it all. I currently just launched my booking site. So now clients are able to book online. I am super excited about this next chapter in my makeup career. I eventually want to work in the movie and film industry to do special fx makeup.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mother saw me clearly before I could see myself. I used to do makeup on myself for a while before I started doing others. My mother was my first face I have ever done makeup on and she promoted my business way before I even had a business. Her confidence in me has helped me grow my own confidence in myself. I thank God everyday for blessing me with such a good support system.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I go through phases every year of giving up. I’ve tried to restart my makeup business 3 times over the last 3 years! I used to get really discouraged and told myself I was not good enough but God keeps bringing makeup back into my life so I feel as though He wants me to spread the gospel through the talent He gave me. Feeling lost and discouraged is normal but I had to tell myself there must be some reason makeup keeps coming back to me so 4th times the charm!
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie in the makeup industry would be that it’s oversaturated. There are a lot of makeup artists but there is only one you. Don’t let the pressures of society keep you from becoming an MUA because you will have your own style and own vibe you bring to the community. You can be just as successful as anyone else if you put your mind to it and keep going.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I would say at first I was just doing what I was told to do but these past few years I have been trying to do what I was born to do and it is a struggle letting some of those old habits go. I’ve always been a people pleaser but I’ve learned to say no and live how I want to and it’s been very rewarding. I can plan how I want and do the things I’ve been holding off.
