Today we’d like to introduce you to Willette Parrish-Harris
Hi Willette, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
“In high school, I discovered my passion for helping others and making a positive impact on people’s lives. This realization stemmed from my desire to support and uplift those around me, which led me to explore a career in social work. Encouraged by a conversation with a friend’s mother, who was a social worker, I pursued a major in social work during my undergraduate and graduate studies.
Over the course of 30 fulfilling years working in the foster care division of the Department of Social Services, I transitioned from a role as a case manager to eventually becoming a program manager. Even after retirement, my dedication to serving others persisted. While I had spent decades focusing on supporting children, I felt compelled to shift my focus towards assisting the adult population.
Witnessing the transformative moments and breakthroughs that individuals experience during therapy sessions has been incredibly impactful for me. The opportunity to witness firsthand the profound changes and growth in people’s lives is truly fulfilling. These moments of revelation and personal growth have solidified my belief that helping others and fostering positive change is my true calling.
The joy that comes from seeing individuals ask questions, undergo personal transformations, and experience ‘aha’ moments during our sessions reaffirms that I am on the right path. This journey has not only shaped my career but has also deeply influenced my personal and professional growth, reinforcing my commitment to continuing to make a difference in the lives of those I serve.”
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
“No, the road to where I am today has not been smooth. Balancing a heavy caseload at work while pursuing my graduate degree was challenging. Even after graduation, I continued to face obstacles while juggling the demands of starting my own practice, maintaining leadership responsibilities at my job, dealing with family illnesses, and navigating the responsibilities of being a new mother. Despite these challenges, the journey to where I am now has been incredibly rewarding.
Throughout this journey, I have undergone a transformation in the way I perceive people and the work that I do. My mindset towards healing has evolved, and I now approach my work with a different perspective and a deeper understanding. Exploring various theoretical models, perspectives, and techniques has expanded my knowledge and changed the way I provide services to those in need. These experiences have not only shaped my professional growth but have also enriched my personal development, allowing me to offer more effective and compassionate support to those I serve.”
