Inspiring Conversations with Whitney Lane of Learning Lane

Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Lane.

Hi Whitney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Childcare: I started my journey as an educator in May of 2012. I was a teacher KIPP College Prep HS in DC for 5 years before I got my Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and decided to start my own childcare center. I opened Learning Lane STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) childcare center in PG County MD in 2018. Learning Lane Child Development Center exists to provide a safe, high-quality, developmentally appropriate environment for infants, preschool, and school-age children. Our focus is to provide a stimulating early care and education experience, which promotes each child’s social/emotional, physical, and cognitive development. Our goal is to provide a holistic and innovative approach to education that will ensure our students are lifelong learners. I have employed over 10 African American employees between 2018 and now to work as teachers and substitutes at Learning Lane Childcare Center. I have also partnered with multiple black-owned businesses to provide activities like basketball, yoga, soccer for Learning Lane’s summer camp program.

Transportation: My transportation journey really was a random idea that popped into my head one day as I was working as an Instructional Specialist at a charter school. At the time, I owned Learning Lane and was coaching the SAT prep teacher who was also the athletic director, He was complaining about the transportation company that our school was using so I told him that I a school bus that the school could use (the bus for Learning Lane summer camp). Shortly after, I signed a contract with my school and 4 other DC Charter schools providing transportation for sports teams and school field trips. I started my trucking company 3 years later in2021. I currently have an amazon relay contract and with 3 trucking employees. I am also working on getting my school bus contract back up and running as athletic and school-based trips are starting back up after ending due to schools closing during the pandemic.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Childcare: There were many bumps in the road as I started up my childcare center. Long nights of promoting at local business-like Walmart and neighboring business while having my 5-year-old daughter along for the ride, door-to-door marketing, issues getting licensed with the office of childcare, etc. At one point, my entire team quit and I literally had to start from scratch on my own (hiring new employees and enrolling families. At the end of the day, I never gave up and now Learning Lane childcare center has been full to capacity consistently since 2019.

Transportation: I made so many mistakes and took major financial hits starting in the trucking/transportation business. However, there is no reward without trials, errors, and failures. I will do whatever it takes to have a 3-5 truck fleet by 2024.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
