Today we’d like to introduce you to Silvie Sylvester.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m originally from the Czech Republic, and I came to the United States in August 2021 for what was supposed to be just one year to learn English and finally fulfill my dream of visiting Alaska. Life, however, had a much bigger plan for me.
Within my very first week in the U.S., I met my husband. From the beginning, he became my biggest cheerleader and always seeing more in me than I ever saw in myself.
When I received my work permit, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do. I only knew that it wouldn’t be easy, my English wasn’t perfect at the time, and starting over in a new country is never simple. So I made a decision that I would build something of my own. Something unique. Something that didn’t exist here yet.
In October 2023 I discovered Japanese Head Spa. At that time, there was nothing like it in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, D.C. I decided I would be the first. I traveled to New York to become certified, attended school to get licensed, and my husband and I opened a small head spa oasis from our home.
I found my passion almost instantly.
The attention to detail, the sensory experience, the deep relaxation
I poured my entire heart into every treatment. In just four months, I was fully booked for six months ahead, with over 2,000 people on the waitlist. That was the moment I realized this was bigger than me. I needed help, more space, and more beds to serve the growing demand.
That’s when I reached out to my sweet friend Kimberly and asked if she wanted to grow with me at SCaIR. Even then, we were still working with just one bed and I knew the next step would be the hardest yet.
Because my business was under one year old, it was extremely difficult to secure a commercial space and with business loans requiring two years of history, the path forward wasn’t simple After nearly a year of persistence, I found and built our new SCaIR location.
Today, SCaIR is located in a beautiful, house-style building in Crofton, Maryland, with three treatment rooms and the ability to welcome three guests at the same time. Our team has grown to include two incredibly talented therapists, Wenndy and Evelyn, along with our wonderful receptionist, Christianna. Very soon, we will be opening SCaIR Skin Care in the same building, expanding our services to include facials and continuing to elevate the experience we offer.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
English wasn’t my first language, I was new to the country, and I had to learn everything from scratch even what an EIN or LLC was. But I already knew nothing could be as hard as leaving my family, my home, and my native language behind. That perspective gave me the strength to keep going.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
SCaIR is a luxury Japanese head spa focused on ritual, relaxation, and scalp health. Through intentional scalp massage, exfoliation, and specialized tools and techniques, each treatment is designed to deeply relax the nervous system while restoring the scalp and hair. Clients leave feeling renewed with a clean, balanced scalp, silky hair, and a sense of calm that lingers long after the experience.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My husband, who believed in me from the start, sacrificed everything to help build SCaIR and handled the business side so I could focus on the work. And my incredible team without them, none of this would be possible.
