Inspiring Conversations with Sierra Edwards of Sequined By Sierra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Edwards.

Hi Sierra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up I loved art, drawing, and painting were a huge outlet for me. As I matured and was allowed to wear makeup, I became obsessed. I was able to utilize the techniques from painting to blend and master my makeup skills. Shortly after graduating high school, I began selling Avon and taking makeup clients. I have now been doing makeup for over fifteen years. Most of my clients, for years, were from word of mouth as I did not have an online presence. Two years ago, I took a leap of faith and decided to have an online presence, doing so has opened so many doors for me and allowed me to interact with an audience, gaining new clients as well.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an entrepreneur is not easy, it is fulfilling. I appreciate every client and feel like I gain a new friend with each booking. I have been diagnosed with both PCOS and endometriosis so I managing my health is my main struggle. With assistance from my husband and doctor, I have been able to manage my health with minimal business interruption. Getting to this place has been hard work but it allows me to be confident when booking dates in advance knowing I will be able to show up.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a traveling makeup artist that specializes in natural makeup enhancement. I am known for providing excellent service, using current techniques, and being personable. What sets me apart from other artist is that I allow my client to dictate their outcome, I ask my clients what they are comfortable with and we go from there. I do not have a cookie-cutter makeup style and am able to personalize any look. I offer my services at an affordable price and my work is of top quality.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Despite the makeup industry being saturated, do not be discouraged from following your passion. It’s easy and best to start out practicing on yourself, friends, and family members to get honest feedback and perfect your skills before you take clients. Building an artist kit can be very expensive so I would suggest starting off small. You can purchase and expand your kit as needed. When I started out, I wish I knew how to say NO to free work, opportunities, and clients that did not align with who I am as a person… The right clients and opportunities will come along and value both you and your skills.
