Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In middle school, concerns about my behavior began to surface. I was at an age where I started exploring newfound freedoms that seemed exciting and, to my young mind, without consequence. I stayed after school for basketball games, skipped classes to play handball, and spent time hanging out with friends. These were behaviors I saw many of my peers engaging in, seemingly without impunity. However, in my Caribbean household, these activities were strictly frowned upon and represented a departure from the discipline and focus my family valued.

By the time I graduated high school with a 1.7 GPA, I found myself in a challenging place, both academically and emotionally. My guidance counselor, in a moment that still resonates painfully, suggested that “college wasn’t for everyone.” Those words didn’t just sting—they reinforced the doubts I already held about my abilities and self-worth. I began to question whether I was good enough to succeed, to belong, or to achieve anything meaningful. This turmoil, coupled with my academic challenges, left me wrestling with low self-esteem and a fragile sense of identity. Despite these obstacles, I was accepted into two colleges and chose to attend Morgan State University, a decision that marked a turning point in my life. I graduated with a 3.1 GPA, a reflection of my growth and resilience.

“Working with Dr. Allen-Milton provided me with much education, information, and insight on having a healthy work-life harmony. I will most definitely be sharing this learned knowledge with those I surround myself with. Thank you, Dr. Milton, for the learning opportunity.”

“The most important day for me was the topic of control and surrender. As I got older, I could see how I had developed mindsets like, ‘If you want something done right, do it yourself,’ and not relying on too many people as a defense mechanism to avoid disappointment. The truth is, we have to learn to relinquish control, trust people, and accept help—or surrender. I can’t do it all, and God is slowly showing me that I don’t have to. This lesson, especially in motherhood, is priceless.”

“Hi, Dr. Sharlene, I now can place things in the proper perspective. I organize my day and my week so that I’m not overwhelmed. Small daily goals are helping me as well. Thank you for having this. It has truly been a benefit and help to me. I am managing my time and making the most of it.”

At Honoring the Whole You, we are committed to walking alongside our clients on their journey toward greater mental clarity, emotional wellness, and soul health. We don’t just offer services; we offer transformation, equipping individuals with the tools they need to create and sustain the life they envision.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Even in the midst of my struggles, I have learned that the God of the Bible had plans for me—plans far greater than the limitations others placed on me and infinitely bigger than the doubts I held within myself. Over time, I came to realize that my worth was not determined by a GPA or the expectations others set for me. God’s grace and purpose for my life gave me the strength to rewrite my story, guiding me toward growth, resilience, and unshakable faith in the face of adversity.

While those experiences were challenging, they became defining moments that forced me to confront my insecurities and dig deeper to discover who I truly was and who I aspired to become. Despite the setbacks and doubts, these trials laid the foundation for my personal and professional growth. They shaped me into someone who understands the value of perseverance and the importance of trusting in a higher purpose.

This journey has not only transformed me but also fueled my passion to encourage and empower others—particularly those who feel overlooked, underestimated, or stuck. My experiences have taught me that setbacks don’t determine destiny. With faith in God, determination, and a willingness to keep moving forward, we can rise above any challenge and step into the life we were meant to live.

Important Lessons I’ve Learned:

Be True to Your Calling
It’s essential to remain authentic, consistent, and integral in living out what I believe I am called to do. When I honor my purpose with sincerity, I can serve others more effectively and leave a lasting impact.

Always Be Prepared
Preparation allows me to be ready for opportunities.

Surround Yourself with Mentors
Having mentors who exemplify where I desire to be has been invaluable. Their guidance, wisdom, and lived experiences provide a blueprint for success and remind me that the path forward is navigable.

Surrender to God’s Wisdom
Learning to surrender and seek God’s wisdom has been one of the most transformative lessons of my journey. When I lean into His guidance, I find clarity, strength, and the ability to overcome even the toughest challenges.

Involve Your Family
Wherever possible, I make an intentional effort to involve my immediate family. Their support grounds me, and including them ensures that my journey reflects our shared values and brings us closer together.

Get involved in communities that uplift and validate you. Surround yourself consistently with a supportive spiritual community, friends, family, loved ones, and engaging activities that affirm your worth, encourage your growth, and align with your values.

Through it all, I have come to understand that life’s road is not linear, and the challenges we face often carry the greatest lessons. By remaining true to my faith, leaning on others for support, and walking boldly in my purpose, I have found that even the most difficult seasons can lead to profound growth and joy.
