Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanique Johnson.
Hi Shanique, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started from the ground up, building my career through teaching, entrepreneurship, and a deep desire to create a more stable and meaningful life for my family. Over the years, I’ve worked in education, bookkeeping, publishing, and business development — often learning through real-life experience, persistence, and faith rather than having everything handed to me.
I’m the founder of [Secure Bookkeeping Services](https://securebookkeepingservices.com?utm_source=chatgpt.com), where I help businesses stay organized financially and better understand their numbers so they can grow confidently. Alongside that, I’ve also published multiple books focused on practical living, education, food preservation, wellness, and personal growth.
After spending years in education, I transitioned into accounting and bookkeeping, where I’ve worked for the past 10 years in areas such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, billing, invoicing, financial tracking, and customer account management. During that transition, I continued teaching online simultaneously, balancing both careers while developing my financial and business expertise.
Today, my focus is on helping service-based businesses simplify their finances, improve cash flow awareness, and make more informed business decisions. Through Secure Bookkeeping Services, I aim to provide reliable, organized, and supportive financial management so business owners can focus more on growth and less on the stress of keeping up with their books.
My journey has not been easy, but it has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of continuing forward even when results take time. Every experience — from teaching to accounting to entrepreneurship — has played a role in shaping the professional I am today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was building a bookkeeping business completely from scratch without having an existing network, referrals, or connections in the industry. Many people enter the field already knowing business owners or getting clients through word of mouth, but I had to figure things out largely on my own.
There were also challenges with marketing and trying to stand out in a very competitive online space. I spent a lot of time learning website development, branding, client outreach, and digital marketing while still trying to improve my technical bookkeeping skills and gain experience. Like many entrepreneurs, there were moments where the lack of immediate results felt discouraging.
Another obstacle was balancing multiple responsibilities at once — entrepreneurship, teaching, publishing, and personal responsibilities — while still trying to grow a business with consistency and professionalism. There were times I questioned whether I was on the right path, but I kept learning, adapting, and improving.
At the same time, those challenges helped shape me. They taught me resilience, patience, problem-solving, and how to continue building even when things feel uncertain. I’ve learned that entrepreneurship is rarely a straight path, and sometimes the hardest seasons develop the skills and mindset needed for long-term success.
As you know, we’re big fans of Secure Bookkeeping Services. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Running my own bookkeeping business has been both a challenging and rewarding journey. I am the founder of [Secure Bookkeeping Services](https://securebookkeepingservices.com?utm_source=chatgpt.com), where I help service-based businesses stay financially organized and better understand the numbers behind their business.
My professional journey started in education, where I spent many years teaching before branching into the accounting field. Even after transitioning into accounting and bookkeeping, I continued teaching remotely while building hands-on experience in finance. Over the last 8 years, I’ve worked more deeply in accounting, gaining experience in accounts receivable, accounts payable, billing, invoicing, customer account management, and financial tracking. Balancing both teaching and accounting simultaneously taught me discipline, adaptability, strong communication skills, and how to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
One thing that pushed me toward bookkeeping was seeing how many business owners struggle to truly understand their finances, while also realizing that I wanted a more flexible lifestyle for myself and my family. I wanted more freedom with my time — the ability to spend meaningful time with family and build a career that wasn’t completely tied to a traditional 9-to-5 schedule.
Helping people has always been a natural part of who I am. I’ve always been the type of person who genuinely enjoys supporting others, solving problems, and making life easier where I can — something I learned from my mother growing up. That naturally carried over into bookkeeping. I noticed that many business owners are so focused on running their day-to-day operations that they don’t always have organized systems in place for tracking cash flow, invoices, expenses, or profitability. I wanted to become someone who could help simplify that process, bring clarity to their finances, and relieve some of the pressure that business owners carry every day.
Today, my focus is on continuing to grow Secure Bookkeeping Services while helping businesses build stronger financial habits and make more confident decisions. Entrepreneurship has taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of continuing forward even during difficult seasons. Every challenge along the way has helped shape both my business and my perspective as a professional.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned along my journey is that success rarely happens overnight, and resilience matters just as much as skill. There were seasons where things did not go the way I planned, and moments where I questioned whether I was on the right path. But those experiences taught me patience, adaptability, and how to keep moving forward even when results are slow.
I’ve also learned that relationships and genuine service matter more than simply trying to “sell” something. People want to work with someone they can trust — someone who listens, communicates well, and truly cares about helping them. Coming from both a teaching and bookkeeping background helped me understand the importance of patience, problem-solving, and treating people with respect.
Another major lesson has been understanding the value of balance and flexibility. Building a career that allows me to support others while also having more time for family and personal growth became increasingly important to me over the years. That perspective has shaped not only how I work, but also the kind of business I want to continue building moving forward.
