Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Hurst.
Hi Ruby, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
World Wide Water Corporation was born out of both personal loss and a deep sense of purpose. After experiencing significant challenges in my life, including the loss of my grandmother, I felt driven to create something meaningful something that could help not just my family, but communities around the world. What began as a way to cope and rebuild grew into a mission focused on some of the most critical issues we face today: systemic equity, access to clean water, sustainable energy, and environmental stability.
Living in West Baltimore opened my eyes to the realities many communities face, from aging infrastructure to environmental and public health concerns. That pushed me to get involved locally by organizing neighborhood cleanups and talking with residents about water safety and simple purification methods.
Over time, I realized I didn’t just want to clean up spaces. I wanted to help improve the systems that impact how communities live and stay healthy. That’s what led me to build World Wide Water Corporation.
Baltimore is where I found my purpose, and it’s where I’m committed to continuing this work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve faced personal and financial challenges, but also the reality of working within systems that don’t always prioritize communities like mine.
In places like West Baltimore, you see how environmental issues, aging infrastructure, and public health disparities are all connected and how often they’re overlooked. At the same time, we’re seeing rollbacks in government support and uneven progress in green energy, which means the communities most impacted are often the last to benefit.
That’s what made it clear to me that this work isn’t just about water, it’s about systemic injustice. And that’s what keeps me committed to building solutions that are equitable, community-driven, and long-term.
As you know, we’re big fans of World Wide Water Corporation . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
World Wide Water Corporation is a mission driven nonprofit focused on addressing systemic inequities through clean water access, environmental restoration, and sustainable infrastructure. Rooted in community based work in West Baltimore, we specialize in practical, scalable solutions such as neighborhood cleanups, water safety education, and green infrastructure projects like rain gardens to reduce flooding and improve environmental health. What sets us apart is our holistic approach, connecting water, energy, housing, and public health to create long term impact in underserved communities. Our work is driven by lived experience, innovation, and a deep commitment to building solutions that not only improve local conditions but can also serve as models for broader change.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
The success of World Wide Water Corporation would not be possible without the support of strong community partners and individuals who have stood beside this work. Organizations like the Chesapeake Bay Trust have played a critical role by providing resources and funding that allow us to bring environmental projects to life. The Irvington Neighborhood Association and the Carroll Neighborhood Association have been instrumental in helping us stay connected to the community, organize efforts on the ground, and ensure that our work reflects the real needs of residents. I also want to recognize Stephan Hurst and Ishmael Hurst, whose support and encouragement have been meaningful throughout this journey. Beyond that, there are many other groups, neighbors, volunteers, and advocates who continue to show up, contribute their time, and fight for positive change. This work is truly collective, and it is built on the dedication of people who care deeply about their communities and are willing to put in the effort to make them better.
