Today we’d like to introduce you to Nerissa Malloy.
Nerissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York by my parents and grandmother who were all from Guyana, South America. I was always in the top classes, and usually always made friends. When I started Middle School, I progressed as an above average student, hung out and got into some trouble. However, I will never forget in the 8th grade as we were nearing graduation the class decided to design a yearbook in computer class specific to just the students in our homeroom. In this yearbook, out of all the different categories, cutest, best dressed, friendliest etc., I was voted “least likely to succeed”. When I read it I just wanted to crawl under the desk to hide and cry. This not only began a feeling of self-doubt within me but a yearning for acceptance alongside a posture to prove everyone wrong.
This carried out through high school, where I got involved in all the wrong things, like cutting school and classes, and hanging out with the wrong crowd just to feel popular and accepted. I was still an above average student and in my last 6 months had only 2 classes to graduate along with a lot of free time on my hands.
Wouldn’t you know that a few months later I surely attended my high school prom and graduation 6 months pregnant. I always dreamed of going away to college to be an OB/GYN and so went my dreams. I will never forget reading my acceptance letter to Adelphi University and remembering the feeling of being least likely to succeed all over again. So now I have to prove everyone wrong again and that I can beat the odds of being a teen mom. I pursued by working with different temp agencies, started my pre-requisites in community college and then got accepted to Nursing school. Medical school was out of the picture because “that chemistry”, and the length of time for Medical School wouldn’t work for me as a young single mom with a toddler even with my current support system.
When I became a Registered Nurse, I started working multiple jobs, met my husband, continued to grow and raise my family, and while doing all the things to look and feel like a success. We focused a lot on material things: cars, jewelry, expensive clothes, shoes and bags, shopping, trips, parties; you name it. And in New York this meant for the kids as well, they had to be dressed. But at the end of the day, it all became boring, meant nothing and I started to feel empty. I was yearning for something more.
The feeling became daunting, so much that my husband and I decided that we needed to get out of New York and start fresh. We needed a clean state, new mindset, and a different circle. This bold move helped me to uncover the true meaning of success, detaching from the material items and doing things that have impact and significance. It led me to a journey of spirituality, self-discovery, personal development, and entrepreneurship.
My parents and grandparents were entrepreneurs and had businesses, so why not me? I always had a knack for mentoring and teaching, and throughout my journey of nursing, entrepreneurship, and direct sales, teaching, building teams and mentoring others was a joy. What brought me more joy was helping others to see beyond their limiting beliefs and taking action towards their own success as they hit their goals in life and business.
This led me to start my coaching business for women. I felt a need to help more women move to action towards their greatness- whatever that looks like for them and not what society says. Identifying “your own’ definition of what success is for you is the key to operating at your highest potential, remaining confident and consistent to achieve it. This is the basis of my framework for Unshakable Success for students, leaders and business owners.
I never imagined my journey through my childhood challenges in school, growing in my career as a Registered Nurse, leader and entrepreneur, would all come together. These experiences not only helped me to climb the success ladder, but achieve awards, recognition and incentive trips in business and build teams and mentor others in both the nurse leadership role as well as the entrepreneurial role.
So now here I am marrying Nursing Leadership with entrepreneurship by taking my expertise in strategy, process improvement, and operations together with the mentoring, teaching, team building, and professional development from entrepreneurship to help other women break through barriers and overcome obstacles to build successful, thriving businesses.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overcoming being voted least likely to succeed, being a teen mom, self-doubt, and chasing success for all the wrong reasons to name the least was certainly no smooth road. But this helped to build my character, my testimony and the blueprint to help others to push past obstacles to still create their success. When I began to encounter the need to prove myself as a young woman in my leadership role, I was equipped on how to navigate, and knew my worth. Nothing came easy, but doing the work on myself to understand my value and self-worth helped me to remain confident, steadfast, overcome naysayers and obstacles in order to execute towards my goals.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a Business Strategist and Operations Consultant. I started my business to help more service-based, professional and healthcare business owners, especially those that transitioned from their 9-5 to create successful, thriving businesses that will allow them the opportunity to be more available to care for themselves, their families, and serve their clients, and their community.
During the pandemic, many healthcare professionals started businesses because of burnout, but unfortunately, they are bringing some of the same habits that cause burnout in the workspace into the entrepreneurial space. As a Registered nurse and business owner, I take an assessment of the health of you and your business, assess risks and opportunities for expansion, create an actionable plan for you to get to your next level, and evaluate how that plan is working. So, I apply the nursing process to your business process so that you can achieve Unshakable success in life and business.
My mission is to help more business owners create freedom by providing the tools and strategies for working smarter, serving clients better, and growing their revenue because I believe successful business owners can create impact and opportunities within their homes and communities.
