Today we’d like to introduce you to Moriana Ratliff
Hi Moriana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The future is a longer story than the past. In short I got started as a baker, just graduating undergrad, hoping to go on to law school. I started baking as a way to save money for law school and ended up ditching the whole idea of school and registered my business in 2016. Since then I went on to do farmer’s markets, pop ups, festivals, caterings, dessert wars, etc. During the pandemic I moved back to Miami and worked as a pastry cook with some of the most talented chefs in the industry, in order to hone in on my skills. I moved back to the DMV in 2022, still met with a warm welcome from my former clientele. We picked up where we left off continuing to grow and expand. In present day I am now in a beginner farmer’s training program as a humble student ready to learn more about agriculture and ways in which I can expand my gift of baking within our community. My focus is making delicious desserts made with organic ingredients, but more importantly, your baker is also your grower! I want to be your Sugar Plug but I also want to be good for you.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has absolutely NOT been a smooth road, but it has always worked out one way or another. The biggest struggles I have faced were of course financial, in the sense of having enough money to support my dream and more importantly support myself. I’ve learned how to be a good steward over what I already have and make magic out of that. Being authentic is key. The right support comes along when you are who you are and not force what you’re trying to be. If you’re a good person and a hard worker, you don’t have to tell anybody that, the right people will always find you and support you. You will become.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Sugar Plug is just that! It’s a movement. Sugar is the product. Plug is the Connect. Through our indulgent treats we create resourceful relationships within our community. We take pride in quality product, classic favorites, exceptional customer service, and rewarding loyalty. It’s about making connections with dessert enthusiasts, but also fellowship with people on the wave of entrepreneurship. As a brand, the CEO is still very much involved in production. You are still getting it straight from the Plug herself, therefore making it an exclusive, one of one, experience. We are family owned and operated providing delivery, catering, and nationwide shipping. Sugar plug is everywhere. Visit www.sugarplug.com
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
See now, I grew up on independent women music. Music is my go to when it’s time to lock in creatively. You had Trina , who taught us the game, Beyoncé was pimping, Destiny’s Child had us proud to have our own. The rap girlies were emerging. Lil Kim, Eve, Missy, eventually down the line Nicki. I grew up seeing fly women who would mush a man in the face if he was subpar lol. I always knew I wanted to work hard and keep my focus on being the best version of myself that I could be. No one could say anything to me if I had it all together. Of course life doesn’t always work out like your 10 year old self thought it would but it’s that little girl that motivates me. She’s the star. I stay true to my talent, always exploring more of myself and my capabilities.
