Inspiring Conversations with Michael Meador of M. W. Meador Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Meador.

Hi Michael, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my journey with photography in 2007 when I was contacted by a friend and photographer by the name of Oleg Volk who asked if I needed photos for my business. He ended up suggesting I buy a camera and he would mentor me in the art of photography. I maintained a hobby level interest until 2010 when I had a friend who asked me to photograph his inventory. This thrust me into the professional world of photography. During the intervening years, my interest in photography expanded into many genres and formats. I started shooting professional analog medium and large format film along side my digital work.

In 2016 I began writing articles and providing images for Photography Nation magazine. This pushed me into a new area of photography and photojournalism. I’ve since been published internationally in print and digital format periodicals. I ended up making new contacts that opened the door for product photography and reviews. Today, I photograph in a number of genres from product photography to boudoir to portrait to wildlife and more.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing worthwhile is easy. It’s been a bumpy road. I’ve fallen into periods of time where I felt my creativity was gone. I’ve wanted to give up more than once. I spent a two month period being absolutely disgusted with the work I was producing. I almost ended my career then.

The biggest struggle is finding ways to keep my images fresh and unique. I try not to fall into a pattern of repetition for my compositions. I want to maintain my “style” while keeping the compositions dynamic and changing.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in product photography, head shots, portraiture, nature/wildlife photography and more. I use alternative lighting techniques and compositions to bring my subjects to life. What sets me apart from others is my ability to travel internationally, thinking outside the box, and going the extra mile to get the shot.

I’m proud of the brand recognition for my work. I’ve developed a style that has become recognizable which has been a benefit for broadening my client base.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a typical latch key Gen X child. I spent most of my time exploring and being outdoors. I took a great interest in outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and hunting. I found a love for music and learned to play several instruments. I dabbled in photography in my early teens when I received a camera for a birthday present one year but at that point, I hadn’t found the obsession with it that I have now.
